A question about tubes and anesthesia
My DD is getting tubes for chronic ear infections.
Can anyone with BTDT experience reassure me about the anesthesia. I've heard horror stories about how the kids wake up, and I know she will be upset when she first comes out of it...but I'm wondering how long that lasts?
If anyone could share their stories I would really appreciate it! Feel free to FM if you are more comfortable.
Thank you!

Re: A question about tubes and anesthesia
My dd had tubes and her adenoids removed in June, 2009 (she was 2 years and 3 months)
the surgery was about 30 minutes and when the nurse came to get me and bring me to recovery, I asked how she was doing. The nurse said she was upset and crying for me (be prepared, this is the hardest part of the whole procedure)
when I got back to the recovery room, the nurse was holding miki but she was crying for me, shaking, pretty hysterical. they sat me down in a rocking chair and I tried to console her, then dh tried, then I tried (you get the picture)....it took about 15 minutes for her to calm down but then she was back to her old self
it will be fine, just be prepared for a meltdown when they "come to"

Thank you so much! I"m happy to hear it was only 15 minutes.

Re: A question about tubes and anesthesia
My son tends to get very upset AND hates Dr's so I expected him to freak and he did. He cried for about 30 minutes after surgery and ended up falling asleep in the car for about an hour

Re: A question about tubes and anesthesia
My DS got a tube in his left ear last week. Surgery was only about 5 minutes. They brought me to see him before he even woke up. The nurse told me the longer they sleep before they regain consciousness, the better they will come out of the anesthesia. He woke up very slowly and was groggy for a while, but he didn't get upset or cry at all. He vomited once before we went home and then was fine after that. By the time we got home about an hour later he was back to his usual self. Good luck!

Thank you for the replies-I appreciate it. I guess we'll see how she does-I'll prepare for the worst and hopefully be surprised.

Re: A question about tubes and anesthesia
Abby had her tubes out in when she was 10 months old. They took her from us and she happily went with the nurse. She was the youngest patient that morning so she went first. I did not see them put her under, but I was there as she woke up. She was inconsolable for about 15 minutes - most likely because she was in an unfamiliar environment and frightened. She was not in pain. We held her and she calmed down with a bottle. The whole procedure was 15 minutes long. Good luck.
