A ton of potty training questions
I am honestly in shock that I am even writing this.
First off, if you don't know, my son has a speech delay. He has a ton of words (probably about 200) but I need to prompt him with alot of things.
That being said, he has peed on the potty about 5 times in the last three days, basically the second I put him on the potty.
Does this mean he is ready to start potty training? He will not tell me if he has to go (although, after I put him on the toilet last night and he peed, he got off, and then asked DH to put him on again - and he peed again -but I think that was just a fluke)
Where do I even begin? I was thinking of taking it slowly and just putting him on after he drinks something?
Also - should I start putting him in pullups?
Anything else you think I need to k now, please add!

Re: A ton of potty training questions
Yay Jack!!!
I am just like you, I have NO idea what to do or even where to begin.
DD has peed on the potty once (well, 2 different times during the same sitting)...and now she is TERRIFIED of it Literally freaks if we ask if she wants to use it or if we put it on the toilet and she sees it, she flips.
I would SO hire someone to teach her
ETA: Jack talks a mile a minute...I love his little voice!!!

Re: A ton of potty training questions
I would place him on it every 30 minutes and see what happens, once he starts going regularly, lose the diapers and get him some big boy underware, he will NOT want to be wet in them and it may help
good luck

Re: A ton of potty training questions
I wouldn't use pull ups except for night time (night time underwear) and go right into underwear. I would probably put him on the toilet every 20-30 minutes to see if he has to try and go. Once he starts to understand the feeling of needing to go then I would go to asking him if he has to go every 20-30 minutes.
The fact that he is showing this much interests, I wouldn't brush it off. I would really go with it. I didn't follow through with DS because I was getting lazy about it and I needed to a wait a whole year before he was ready.
Also, be prepared for accidents. Don't yell at him or raise your voice. Just bring him back to the bathroom and tell him next time he needs to go to tell mommy. He needs to know that having an accident is ok, but he needs to try and make it. My biggest issue I had with DS is that he would wait until the very last second to tell me has to go.
Good Luck!!

IMHO< pull ups are a waste of money, they are glorified diapers...I DID use them with miki for a bit and only when I put her into underware was she 100% potty trained...give it a try, he may be ready, even if you are not

pull ups may just be a glorified diaper BUT i believe it is all mental for the child. It's not a diaper to them and the pulling up and down gives their little mind that "I'm wearing big boy undies" effect. I'd go with the pull ups for sure...who wants that many change of clothes in one day and wet couch, chairs, etc...

they did not work for my child...just my opinion....
accidents teach the child to realize when they have to go...it is part of training, IMHO

Re: A ton of potty training questions
I used pull ups for Anthony and he kept having accidents. Even though he liked that he was able to pull them up and down..he KNEW he was able to pee in them.
I put him in underwears..3 days later 100% potty trained.

They didn't work for mine either. He knew it was diaper and would pee in it. I think this is why he still pees at night because because knows he won't get wet. Once I am done with the few packages of pull ups I have (I only use them at night) I am giving them up. I actually have a friend whose daughter will pee in a pull up if she has it on at night but if my friends puts their DD to bed and he forgets about the pull up and is just in undies she wakes up dry.

As soon as I stopped using pull ups for overnight, he was waking up dry too. Kids know that they can pee in pull ups. They know that they can have an "oops".

Re: A ton of potty training questions
mine never peed or pooped in pull ups...i used them when we were going out or going to someone's home.
as far as underwear...he would just pull them off and go pee in a corner somewhere and put them right back on.
potty training here took months and months.
peeing we were okay with...pooping...forget it. even now, he only sits on the toliet in a frog position to poop. totally scared to sit and poop on toliet.

Re: A ton of potty training questions
in my mind I had to lock us in the house for a week, put him in underwear and do this. There is no way I can be out and about with him in underwear.
Also - what do you think about the speech issue and him not being able to tell me that he has to go.

sometimes actions speak louder then words i can ask josh a million times a day if he has to pee...and the answer is no.
but if he's holding himself, dancing around...much more effective to know then words.

Re: A ton of potty training questions
We put DS in pull ups and that worked for us. He was really young but he potty trained pretty fast. We introduced the potty at 19 months and was using it regularly at 21 months. Daycare kept suggesting we put him in underwear but I thought he was too young. He stayed dry most of the time. We did put him in underwear about 2-3 weeks ago (23 months old) and he has one small accident the first day and not since then.

In the beginning I would put him on the potty every 45 min - 60 min...then when starts to understand he might run to the bath room when he needs to go or grab at your leg. He will definitely let you know! Good luck!
