ABC vs. Globus (Italy Tours)

Can anyone give me reasons to choose one over the other. I'm so confused! We're looking to go to Italy next year and we're no sure which company to go with.

also, some tours don't include Tuscany but do include Sorrento/Capri.....which one do you think is better to see with the tour group? thanks

I don't have any experience with neither tour company, but you can't miss Tuscany or the sorrento area.Chat Icon

Re: ABC vs. Globus (Italy Tours)

don't know about that specific tour but we took a Globus tour last christmas (Munich, Prague, Budapest and Vienna) and were extremely happy with EVERYTHING about the trip. My parents were so happy that they went back and did another European trip with Globus(not Italy either) just this fall. They were just as happy with them this time around.

Re: ABC vs. Globus (Italy Tours)

I did the "Italy by Rail" tour with ABC for my honeymoon. It was amazing!! We went to Venice, Florence and Rome in that order. The tour included 3 nights in each place and train tickets between cities. You were 100% on your own, but we did meet some people doing the same trip and hung out a couple of times. All of the hotels were very nice, but I have to say, the Venice hotel was luxurious--San Clemente Palace was on its own island!

DH and I extended our trip because we wanted to see Sorrento/Capri. We ended up staying 1 extra night in Rome at the same hotel and then booking our own side trip to Sorrento (where we stayed another 3 nights). We then came back to Rome for one night (at a different hote that we booked on our own) and then flew back to NY. ABC was very accomodating in changing our return flight.

Highly recommend!

Wow! That's sounds so wonderful!
I actually have all my brochures now for ABC, Globus and Trafalgar. ABC seems really great too - and I saw that rail one - my questions are :

-When you were in each city, was it hard to see the famous statues, museums, churches, etc b/c you were not on a trip. In other words, did you have to wait on longer lines, get locked out of certain times, get lost finding the places, in general as a result of not being on a tour?

-We would also want to see the Amalfi coast - how exactly did you get down there from Rome? Was it hard to do?

-Were there any tours companies in the cities that you could hook up with to take you around?

-Did you feel you saw everything you wanted to see in each city?

I'm a little big confused b/c a lot of girls on here did it on their own and felt that was fine. DH and I - when we travel- we want to see everything - so we're always on the go. A tour seems like a good option to see everything and have no figuring out to do.
However, there is something nice about exploring things on your own. Companies like Globus schedule in time to do your own thing. So I'm not sure if that satisifes both the need to be on a tight schedule to get it all in as well as to make some decisions on your own.

it definately does.... they schedule in alot of free time but they also offer alot of side trips that you can pay for if you decide you want to. I remember when we did Globus we did most of the side trips because we were with my family and thats what most of them wanted... but there were a few young couples on our tour that barely did any of the "extras" and were always going off and discovering on their own

It sounds like my DH and I are just like you guys--we are on the go nearly every second of our vacations Chat Icon and this tour really worked for us, especially since we're "do it yourself" type people too. Plus, we figured we'll have enough time for tour buses when we're older and more tired! So...

We absolutely saw everything in the 3 major cities. We had several guide books that we brought from home--Fodor's, etc.--and those were a tremendous help. We also had recommendations from former Italy travelers we know.

There were also tour companies you could hook up with to see certain things. For example, we took a bus tour to see the Roman catacombs--the information for this was provided by our hotel...there were brochures, etc. We also took a bus tour to see the 4 major Roman cathedrals. Our tour guides were fantastic. Of course when you go to the actual sites, such as Il Duomo in Florence or the Vatican, for example, there will be ongoing tours during the day. As I recall, we had headphones with English tapes at St. Peter's Basilica for a self-guided tour.

As far as getting down to Sorrento, we took the railroad (forgot what the Italian version is called) to Naples. In Naples we caught a "local" subway that wasn't exactly the lap of luxury, but we felt that made it all the more fun. We also took a day trip to Capri from Sorrento.

Put it this way, the only thing we did not see which I kind of waited my whole life to see was Pompeii. This would have been during the Sorrento "leg" of our journey, but we were so exhausted from everything we had seen during the two weeks, we looked at each other and just said, "Nah, we'll catch that our second trip to Italy." Chat Icon Ended up not missing it at all!

I hope this helps...if you need anymore information or recommendations, feel free to ask! I am sooo jealous!!!

Re: ABC vs. Globus (Italy Tours)

We decided to use Globus over ABC b/c Globus leaves on the weekend - and ABC only leaves mid week which isn't great since I would be wasting vacation days the earlier part of the week.

ABC did have the better tour for what we wanted - more Amalfi mixed in - but we will be getting a touch of it with Globus.

I wish ABC left on the weekends as well
