Re: Absolutely sick over this NYPD shooting/murder
Megyn Kelly showed a video montage of clips of the mayor, the president, and Sharpton commenting on the issues of race & law enforcement- which many are saying fueled the fire.
ETA: the montage starts around 2 minutes in.

Re: Absolutely sick over this NYPD shooting/murder
When the Garner and Brown cases were being discussed, most people said it was their actions that were responsible for their shootings. To an extent, I buy that, although I would argue the officers involved may have contributed as well. But don't blame police in general, many said, and I completely agree.
With this shooting, it seems that people are desperate to find people outside the shooter to blame. Why? Because he's dead and there is no one to punish? Parsing through Obama's speeches and trying to make his words responsible for this crime makes no sense. Blame the man who planned it, bragged about it and did it.
The only exception is the protesters chanting kill the cops. That. I agree, is inexcusable, although fortunately a small sample of people involved.
But be consistent. If people are responsible for their actions, then this shooter is responsible for the shooting. You can't claim personal responsiblity when it suits you and ignore it when it doesn't.

Re: Absolutely sick over this NYPD shooting/murder
I saw a meme with Jon Stewart with this quote: "you can truly grieve for every officer who's been lost in the line of duty in this country, and still be troubled by cases of police overreach. Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive. You can have great regard for law enforcement and still want them to be held to high standards."
I thought that was great.

Yes; they are not mutually exclusive. But they do not belong in the same sentence. At least not today--right now. He should not be reinforcing the notion that a cold-blooded murderer made some kind of "statement" by putting them in the same sentence.

Not saying it necessarily happened in this clip bc I haven't watched it but megyn kelly and Fox News tend to show clips out of context to promote their anti-Obama agenda.

Just curious in your opinion,do you not think if not for the chanting of the prosters and if the mayor had chosen different words and if Al sharpton would just shut up in general those officers may be alive?
Yes I guess blame the shooter,of course. But we live I times where there is really disturbed people so by speaking he way he spoke and letting these protesters say what they said you don't think it fueled a fire It gave a reason for these guys who are clearly unstable to think they are heroes for killing cops
And what's wrong with being desperate for someone to blame. These deaths could have been prevented

FYI: EVERY news channel does this. They ALL have agendas to promote. But these are comments recently made by DiBlasio, Sharpton, and Obama. In context bc if you watch the news regularly you'll remember hearing these sentiments in the last few weeks. It's just more powerful having them presented back to back like this.

I don't consider a opinion piece from Fox News a source. Obama saying police departments have gotten into bad habits is not inciting anything, it's a fact. The amount of unarmed minority men being shot by police in the last year is staggering. This is not a race war or a war on police. A mentally ill man shot two police officers. That's a tragedy, not a trend.
I don't mean to specifically target you here but the statistic that I heard is quite different. The number that I have heard is significantly different. 98% of african americans killed by african americans and less than 2% by whites.

Of course most blacks are killed by blacks. Most whites are killed by whites. Most crime is local and people tend to self segregate. That is irrelevant to the discussion about police misuse of force.

Its interesting how Fox News is all up in arms over this - yet when right wing whites kill cops it gets nary a mention.

from Media Matters - Another police assassination attack unfolded in June. Claiming to be acting under the bloody "banner of Liberty and Truth," Jerad Miller and his wife Amanda entered a restaurant Las Vegas executed two local policemen while they at lunch.
As bullets flew, one of the shooters reportedly shouted that the "revolution" had begun. The killers then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and badges, and covered them with cloth that featured the "Don't tread on me" Gadsden flag, which has recently been adopted as a symbol of the tea party movement.
Six days earlier, the shooters had posted a manifesto on Facebook where he announced "we must prepare for war." Jerad Miller, who traveled to Cliven Bundy's Nevada ranch this spring to join the militia protests against the federal government, declared: "To stop this oppression, I fear, can only be accomplished with bloodshed."
Raw Story reported that Miller "left behind social media postings that show his concerns over Benghazi, chemtrails, gun control laws, and the government's treatment of rancher Cliven Bundy." And according to an NBC News report, the shooter had talked to his neighbor about his "desire to overthrow the government and President Obama and kill police officers."
Fox News primetime hosts Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity both ignored the shocking cop-killer story the night after it happened; Megyn Kelly devoted four sentences to it.
How convenient. Fox News made Cliven Bundy out to be some kind of folk hero, but when folks who joined in his cause killed cops, it was never mentioned.

Fox News is not "all up in arms over this" EVERYONE is all up in arms over this!!! The posters above, including myself were just posting links to fox that directly relate to this tragedy and the reason people are angry at the mayor. Some people weren't understanding the outrage toward politicians and I posted my Megyn Kelly link to show why some people think politicians have contributed to an anti-police climate.
Let's not get off topic. That other case where the right wing radicals killed cops is also tragic, but completely irrelevant to this case. The 2 cops that were JUST executed in their car not even a week after protesters were chanting they want dead cops and attacking police on the BKLYN bridge is definitely going to get more coverage due to the nature of what's going on in NYC currently.
(ETa: I think they should have covered those police who were killed too, and I think this further goes to show how hard of a job police have bc people from every angle hate them!)

Absolutely sick over this NYPD shooting/murder
I have a question.
And I am NOT defending DeBlasio.
Question: My understanding is the rift between him and the cops stemmed from a public? Conversation or statement made by him that he spoke to his black son and was concerned that he was at higher risk of being stopped/arrested/hurt by the cops then, let's say, a white child of the same age. Or to break down, as a black man his son has more risk than a white man. I am very pro cop but this is almost certainly true. I'm not saying every black man breaks the law. However a black man has a much bigger probability of being stopped (period) than a white man.
Is that DeBlas said out loud for people to hear? That's my understanding of how this debacle between him and the cops started.
And also I saw the cops turn their backs on HiM at the hospital. What was he supposed to do?
Again I am NOT defending him. Frankly I don't even know why there is a rift. If it's on his statement to his son it was a candid and true statement. Stupid to say out loud.
But true.
I would appreciate any onsite because I don't know what the whole story is.

why is it irrelevant when police don't account for a significant percentage in any way?
