Acid reflux moms...how much cereal do you use to thicken up the bottle???

My ped. says one teaspoon for every ounce. My mom thinks that it is too much food for a 2 month old and maybe thats why he gets belly aches. Im giving him cereal in EVERY bottle.

What does your ped. recommend?

we never did cereal because I didn't want to upset her GI tract even more processing cereal that is more difficult on such a young babys belly and because the enzymes found in breast milk would have started to break down the cereal anyway and wouldn't have worked.

But, when it was suggested to me I was told a tsp per 2 ounces.

My doctor told me the same thing, but when I got home and researched the hell out of this, most of the information say that putting cereal in milk to help with acid reflux is an old wives tell. There is no proof this works. I decided not to give cereal and instead kept DS upright for 20 minutes after sleeping and I elevated his bed when he went to sleep. These two things helped a lot. He still spits up but I believe the acid reflux has gone away.

I did 1 Tablespoon for DS 5oz bottle and I even did that with his 6-7oz bottles. I never increased it.

He's 6.5mnths and I'm down to 1/2 Tablespoon in his 7oz bottle.

Whatever it said on the side of the box was how much my ped said to give.

Shane's gastroenteroligist advised against this. She said it doesn't really help and will just aggravate his belly. So we just stick with the Prevacid and will wait for him to grow out of it.

My ped. said 1 teaspoon for every 2 ounces of formula. However, if your child also has a milk allergy, be sure to use beechnut NOT Gerber as it is soy based. I learned this the hard way.
Also, we recently saw the gastro, and he said that the cereal really doesn't help, it just may prevent the spitting up which really only helps the parents. He said not to put it in. If the reflux is really an issue to use a med. instead.

It makes sense that he would get a belly ache from it. Babies have a very immature digestive system and an open gut until they are around 6 months. If I were you, I would stop the cereal for a couple of days and see if his temperment improves.

We did 1 tsp/oz for all of DS's bottles around that age and it worked like a charm! He became a new baby. It doesn't work for everyone, but it definitely worked for him. By 7 or 8 months he was weaned off of rice cereal completely and he outgrew his reflux. We didn't have to give him meds.
