adding central air??
has anyone had central air installed recently? just wondering the approximate cost. we need all the duct work/etc. the are is 2 bedrooms, a large living room/dining room combo, an office and a large kitchen... (we have a walkout basement, but that stays very cool in the summer, so we aren't having it run to there.) we have 3 companies coming next week to give us estimates, so i'm just wondering what we're gonna be in for... thanks!

Re: adding central air??
We had central air put in in November of 08. We had two units installed.
4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, two closets - 2nd floor
LR, DR, kitchen, .5 bath - 1st floor
basement
$10500. They did a FANTASTIC job. We could put a whole other room in our attic - that's how nicely they did the ducts up there.
We used Phoenix Air Conditioning. HIGHLY recommend them. Phoenix Air
eta: we got quotes that ranged from 10500 to 13K. Most of the quotes were in the 13K range...

ITA. If you shop around, you sould be able to get it for 10k. I know a few pwople who got it last year because AC contractors were desperate for business and cutting really good deals. You should be able to get the same this year.

Re: adding central air??
We had CAC installed May 2009.....I HIGHLY recommend US Air Conditioning and Heating out of Port Jefferson Station, NY. They know their stuff and were able to explain to us every detail of the job, answer all our questions, and they were very clean on the job. The crew consisted of 4-5 men who spoke english who could be your next door neighbor they were so nice and didn't mind you being home while they worked.
Here is my review. CAC Install
ETA: Check with LIPA to see if they will be continuing their rebate program. It's one of the reasons we chose to install last year.
We had a dual CAC system installed - one upstairs by the bedrooms and one downstairs on the main level. Both units are 16-SEERS I believe.
