Advice from my ped about number of words

I went for my sons 15 month checkup today, and he asked if my son was saying words. I said yes, and then I asked if there was a certain number. He said at 15 months, he would say anywhere between 5-10 words.

20 words would be really low at 2 yrs old IMO. I'm not a speech pathologist but I've taken my DS to one 3x a week for a year now, so I've talked to her about tons of stuff.

To use my DS as an example-- he had NO words and his babbling was even limited in range at 18 months... a significant speech delay. By his 2nd birthday he had well over 100 words, and that's from a kid starting pretty late. I think I would pursue an eval if my DC only had 20 words by then.

I think 15 words is the norm at 18 months? Correct me if I'm wrong, might have forgotten by now.

I agree. At 2 years, 3 months, DD was considered speech delayed, and she had over 100 words in her vocabulary. She qualified for EI services.
