Advice on how to get him to drink Milk from a cup?

Noah flat out refuses and throws a lovely tantrum when I give him milk in a cup. I have tried every sippy cup, type of cup we own and NOPE.

Im kinda laid back so Im not ( or wasn't)in a huge rush to take his bottles away, but want to start doing it now.

He has a morning and night milk bottle...juice or water in a sippy during the day.

I cut out the morning bottle, but if I cut both he will have no milk at all...he does have a yogurt a day so he gets some calcium but he is a poor poor eater and I kinda rely on the milk.

Should I just take them both away and leave it at that?

I mean we have been offerring in a cup for quite sime time....he just freaks and saysa no when he tastes it is milk.

TIA

I would do it cold turkey with the bottles and keep offering him milk in a cup. If he doesn't take it ...oh well. He may start eating better without milk in his tummy to fill him up. I would also add more calcium rich foods and drinks...such as OJ fortified with calcium.

Will he drink milk out of a big boy cup?

Caden gets milk in a cup at his meals. We've done this for awhile now and he does very well with the cup....

I wont put milk in a sippy cup. Sippy cups get misplaced and for some reason it's always the milk filled ones.

This is the best way. Tell him the baby bottles have to go back to the babies that need them and he now has a big boy cup. Eventually, he'll get thirsty enough to drink from the cup.

glad you posted this. We have the same issue. DS used to take milk from a sippy when he was younger if we were out or something. Now he literally throws the cup at me if he tastes milk.

And he knows when he wants his bottle, he will literally walk me to the fridge and put my hand on the door handle when he wants milk.

I think once we get over his current cold we might go Cold Turkey as well

I have a question, sorry to hijack your thread, so if you go cold turkey, what if DS just refuses his milk for a few days is that okay? He is 16 m onths right now...

Supplement it with other things.

My niece does not drink MILK at all. Ped just asks that she gets some form of calcium. She will offer her oj with calcium, cheeses and yogurts.

My DD loves milk and has it every am and at nite.

If you have tried before and it hasn't worked then I agree - you need to go cold turkey. He will take the milk from the sippy cup eventually.

I will say this..whatever you do, be consistant. If you decide to take the bottles away and explain to him why...then they stay away even if he never takes another sip of milk again in his life. At this age, if they (Children) get one little whiff that we (parents) can cave...they will hold on to it like a pit bull and next thing you know, you'll be cosiging car loans when he's 30!

I completely agree...make the decision that you think is best and stick to it. I took the bottle from Lucas and refused to give in..he had a milk strike for all of 2 days tops and then was drinking from the cup no problem...never went back to the bottle...never even snatched one from another kid at daycare.

Re: Advice on how to get him to drink Milk from a cup?

Good Luck. DS is now 2 1/2 and still refuses to drink milk. I took the bottle away umerous times, but he never gave in and drank the milk. I felt it more important to have milk so I let him keep the bottle til he was 2. On the rare occassion I get him to take a couple sips ge makes the most God awful face, as if i'd just made him drink pee or something. Now I just give him anything else I possibly can with calcium. I hide milk in eggs and anything else I can think of. No matter how much i held my ground he still wouldn't drink it....PED says it is ok as long as he eats cheese, yogurt, milk in cereal etc. I hope you can find away, but if you can't its not the end of the world.

DS would not drink milk out of a cup at all -- not even a sip. I decided to go cold turkey and stick with it. I made sure he had a yogurt and piece of cheese every day. I asked the ped about it and she said as long as he got other calcium it was OK.
Well....after 5 days of no milk he had fig newtons for a snack one day and asked me for milk. I gave it to him in the sippy and he threw it and was not happy!! But I just told him that was his milk and after 10 minutes or so he drank it.

Now, he drinks 1-2 cups of milk in the morning and thats it. He won't drink it the rest of the day. He eats a yogurt almost every day and he loves string cheese so I don't worry about it too much.

I put icecubes into DS milk so he would drink it. Alternatively put chocolate into it but I am not sure how you feel about chocolate milk.

I bought a sippy cup that has a soft straw type of top. Taylor doesn't eat very well and I like her to get a little calcium from milk. I have found that since we cut out the bottles, she is at least eating a little more as well.

The only way it finally worked for us was Strawberry milk. I buy the Syrup so that I only put just a little bit in.

Re: Advice on how to get him to drink Milk from a cup?

I made it the routine to let him watch tv while he drinks his milk sippys (3X per day) it takes about 5-7 minutes so he usually only gets 20 minutes total tv time at most. Since, he loves tv and I don't really let him watch it otherwise - he gets excited when he gets to sit and watch tv while he drinks his milk. He drinks water/juice out of sippys just fine all day long with his meals - he was refusing the milk for a while in the sippys and this routine worked. He gets the milk in the morning first thing, last thing b/f bed and once more randomly during the day so we never give it outside the house. HTH Chat Icon
