My turn for milk advice...
How should I do this?
I want to wean him off his formula.
I normally give him a bottle when he wakes up, send 3-4 to daycare, and then give him one when he comes home before dinner, and one before bedtime. He usually wakes up in the middle of the night for abottle as well... yes, all formula!!!
I was thinking of giving him his morning bottle still, and sending 2 formula bottles and 1 milk bottle to daycare
when he comes home, just giving him milk until his bedtime bottle... and then a formula bottle in the middle of the night...
Will that work?

Re: My turn for milk advice...
Why can't they all be milk? If you're worried about too much milk, either add water to some of them or maybe cut back on the amount in each bottle by a little.

To be honest, I'm more worried about him sleeping at night - he finally is sleeping a bit better - I don't want to mess that up with screwing with his bottles right before bedtime....

Re: My turn for milk advice...
I think he needs to start eating more table food. At 1 yr, my ped. said they should be drinking around 24 oz. of milk. Tyler gets 4, sometimes 5, 5 oz. bottles a day.

I think he needs to eat more table food as well. However, he begs to differ!!!

Re: My turn for milk advice...
Are you giving him whole milk? I would think, actually, that whole milk would hold him over better than formula, but since Ava's never had milk, I don't really know. If you feel comfortable still giving him formula during the night, just give it to him. He survived on it this long, right? Maybe next weekend on Friday night try the milk in the middle of the night. I wouldn't do it in the middle of the week. THis way if you're tired, you don't have to get through the work day if he didn't sleep well.

OK - DH bought milk tonight - I am going to try and give him the milk during the day and stick with the formula for night - I'm hoping that maybe less formula will make him eat more as well, and hope the formula will still do its magic for the night time....
ETA - yes, its whole milk...

Re: My turn for milk advice...
I'm in the process of transitioning Emma to milk. I have just been making bottles with half formula, half milk. Then I will ultimately just make them with all milk once I finish the last can of formula.
I don't think he's going to care if it's milk for formula in the bottles to be honest, since it sounds like he's a drinker!

great advice. when I was weaning dd from formula, I did it rather slowly....I replaced her afternoon bottle first, then about 2 days later another bottle, etc
But when I weaned from the bedtime formula feeding, I did it over the weekend as rachel suggested, just in case
it wound up that dd took to milk fine and was 100% weaned from formula and the bottle in 2 weeks time
Good luck

DH said I should do this - I'll try it - do you think it will affect their tummies in any way? He seems to have a nice iron clad stomach so far!!!

Re: My turn for milk advice...
Ok, this is what I have been doing. Taylor has been on all milk for almost a month, but I started out by making the bottles half milk and half formula. What I do now is give her a bottle with milk when she gets up, send 2 bottles of milk to day care, she also has milk a sippy at day care for meals. When she gets home, she has a bottle and then a bottle before she goes to bed. She will only drink 5 oz at a time, and her eating habits vary quite a bit with all the teething going on, so the ped. said that amount of bottles are good for her.

Re: My turn for milk advice...
He is probably not eating as much table food because he is drinking so much. Once you cut down even by 1 bottle, you will find him eating so much more. I was shocked because Jeremy was the same way. Once I cut down 1 bottle, it was like something in him opened up and now he can't get enough food Now, he gets a 9 oz cup of milk in the morning and an 11 oz bottle of milk at night.

I totally agree with you, the problem is, the kid is like Ghandi when it comes to eating - he will refuse food and hold out for that darn bottle!!!

Re: My turn for milk advice...
Ooh, something else that I learned the hard way...Cailen will have looser poops in the beginning with milk. It is not an allergy! It is just his tummy getting used to the milk. No one warned me of this but once I came on here asking about it, everyone sad, "oh yeah, that happens!"

Ohhh CRAP!!! That means I need another friggen doctor note - they see loose stools at daycare and want to send him home for 24 hours!!!!!

I think it's fine. Emma hasn't had any problems so far and this is the third day of mixing it.

I would just tell them that he is starting milk, they shouldn't need a note! Emma hasn't had any loose ones other than the time I gave her straight milk (that was the first time), then I realized I need to do it gradually. In fact, I think it's binding her up a bit more because since birth, her poop has pretty been thick..like a toothpaste consistency (lovely description I know ) and now it's more "formed"

It isn't really that loose. It is more pasty than loose. I just wanted to warn you, just in case

Re: My turn for milk advice...
Liza,
We mixed the milk and the formula. One day all bottles got 5ozF, 1ozmilk, next day, 4ozF, 2ozmilk, Etc.. Bryan drinks 18oz of milk a day. Sometimes if he's really fussy, an extra oz here or there. This is how we weaned him and he did great. He LOVES the whole milk.

i feel exactly the same.
i'm going to try mixing his day sippy cups with 1/2 milk 1/2 formula and then transition to all milk. i'm going to keep his night sippy as formula and i have no clue what i' going to to for his early morning nursing session cause i'm weaning that too.
let us know how he does!

Re: My turn for milk advice...
Whole milk should make him want to eat more table food. Formula is considered a "complete meal" and is much more filling. Whole milk is not as rich as formula (though it seems really rich because so many of us drink skim or 1%).
A friend who is a pediatrician said that drinking milk should help DC's appetite.
She also said that toddler's caloric needs relative to their sleep are not like they were when they were infants (i.e. a toddler doesn't need to eat a certain amount in order to sleep X hours).

Thats good to know - although the kid never slept X hours!!!

Re: My turn for milk advice...
We are in the process of transitioning now... Ped told us at 11 1/2 months to start giving one bottle a day of milk for three days, then two bottles a day for three days, etc., etc., until he's completely on whole milk. He gets 5 5 - 6 oz bottles a day right now (doesn't always finish though), so we will be totally on milk by Friday! So far, good! Let me know if I can be of any assistance!! Thomas has a great appetite, but never loved his bottles though. He did, however, love the boob!
Good luck!
