Advice please. Animal in basement
My friend found poop on her basement stairs and is afraid there is a raccoon or something in her basement. What should she do? Is there someone she can call? She hasn't seen anything.

Re: Advice please. Animal in basement
I wonder what size poop. Maybe a cat got in? Does she have any entry points that she thinks an animal could get in?
Does she have any pets of her own?
One time this happened to us on our attic stairs. Dh had just gone up. We saw poop on the step. We checked the attic like crazy. Never found anything. We figured it might have been on his sneaker (maybe the side of it) and dropped down off of it when he was walking up the stairs. Never found anything so that was the only explanation. We have dogs so we figured DH must have stepped in it not knowing and it must have been on his sneaker. There was nothing to be found ever but yes we were concerned.

No she has those large metal doors outside with the stairs going down but it's locked. Windows too but they are closed. So weird.

Re: Advice please. Animal in basement
Racoon poop is fairly big, almost like a small to medium-sized dog's poop.
Could it be she tracked it in from outside?
I would say she should start by checking around the walls for any possible entry points. A mouse can get in through a hole as small as a nickel. If there isn't a ton of snow outside, she should also check the outside walls.

have her call an exterminator, they can tell her what kind of animal and how to get rid of it. She can find one that will not kill the animal but catch and release it far away, if she is so inclined.

She did see tracks (larger than a cat) leading to back door. Fairly certain raccoon or opossum.

Definitely have her call an exterminator. My sister had a opossum in the basement and it was something left to a professional

Re: Advice please. Animal in basement
One time a squirrel somehow got into my basement - came through something and ate a hole through the ceiling. Maybe check the ceiling for any evidence?

Def. call an exterminator and be really careful around the poop. Raccoon droppings carry some serious diseases!
