Advice to all regarding Gas leak in homes-UPDATE
I just found out yesterday that I had a major gas leak in the gas pipes that runs from basement to stove (in my soffit). Since we moved into the house in February the kitchen and bedroom above the kitchen smelled bad. I thought you could not smell gas so ruled that at. Yesterday my MIL comes to my house and said she smelled gas at the front door. I call National Grid who comes over ASAP. Because my husband works night he is sleeping so when NG come he says he did not call them. NG thinks that is weird because he smells gas at the door. So it is shut off and have Erik the Plumber comes (if anyone needs his number have it--also has done other work in our house) and finds out major leak (pressure 1 out of 6 for gas line). So we are sill waiting for NG to turn gas on.
The moral of this story is when you buy a house and the gas was shut off the real estate agent is supposed to ask for a gas pressure test.
Do not call gas company for leak call your plumber. I have been waiting since Tuesday for National Grid to show (to turn gas on ) and they say they are busy and there is not time limit for them to show. Could be a week or more (what they told me).

Oh you can definitely smell gas It's carbon monoxide that is odorless.
Glad to hear it was caught before anyone got sick.

Re: Advice to all regarding Gas leak in homes
I was so sick with terrible headaches and I felt really sick to my stomach after 2 weeks of living in my house. I swore it was the "smell" DH thought I was nuts. I stayed home from work and DH's father stopped by to help with some yard work. when he came in the house he said I think I smell gas. I called national grid and they were there very quickly. turned out I had 3 leaks, one that was major!
they left me with scratch and sniff cards so in the future I can match the smell
we also went out and bought new co detectors with gas dectors built in.
Gas you can smell CO you can't
thankfully they fixed everything for us, for no charge! he said if he couldn't fix it we would need a plumber but thankfully he did it

natural gas has almost no smell, so they add a chemical that makes it smell it so you know when you have a leak. I guess if you didn't never had gas heat or stove before you wouldn't know that.
Glad you caught it before there were any problems. ETA- the gas company will always come right away if you say you smell gas.
