advice to stop play and corrective biting

my puppy Maggie just turned 5 months. She's still play biting and doing whatm y trainer calls "corrective" biting... aka giving a quick snap when she doesn't want you to do something. We've read a lot online and in dog mags but none of the methods have been working. Our vet suggested giving her a quick spray of bonaca in her mouth everytime she does it. Has anyone ever done this? Or have any other suggestions?

I heard screaming bloody murder when they do it. Like they are really actually hurting you. To snap them out of it. Loud and distinctive. And not following up that scream with any kind of positive reinforcement like soothing words, or touch.

I would try a water spray bottle, coins in a can, a noise maker, whistle etc.

yes i was going to say this also.... when hershey would do this, the only thing that worked was to pull your hand (or whatever body part they are trying to nip) away and say OUCHHH really loud so they get it.... then you are supossed to give them a chew toy, bone or something else they are allowed to chew on

This is exactly what we did and it worked. We also kept a ton of chewy toys around so she always had plenty of choices. It seemed to help

Re: advice to stop play and corrective biting

Good point! We didn't have a problem with biting, but when he came home and started testing things out by chewing on them, we would say NO and give him a nylabone or something similar.

Corrective command and then a reward for stopping the bad behavior sounds like great training to me. Chat Icon

we've tried all of those things unfortunately. The yelling and noises just egg her on. Our trainer said not to give them a toy right after because that can be viewed as a reward for the bad habit - who knows.... hopefully she will get better as her training classes go on.

sorry nothing is working yet. Have you tried just walking away whenever she bites? Hope it gets better soon.
