African-American Moms or Moms with SUPER curly hair
My niece is bi-racial, (well, tri-racial-Middle Eastern, White and Black) She has a very curly African-American hair. My sister has pin straight hair down to her waist and has never had to do anything but wash and go.
Right now my niece is 1.5 years and her hair is a big pouf. I know my sister wants to do something with it (either braids, little pom-poms etc.) but she doesn't know how or here to go. There is no one on my BIL's side of the family who can help as he is estranged from most of them.
Can anyone suggest a place or just some how-to tips on dealing with her hair?
Thanks!

She could wash, condition and part her hair in twists or braids. If she twists, briads her hair while wet and let it dry, she could then unravel the twist or braid and get a very cute spiral curl going.

Re: African-American Moms or Moms with SUPER curly hair
I'm not african-american but I know that there are salons that cater to african-americans.
I once got my hair done at one of those salons in boston. It took like 5 hours to braid all my hair and I think cost $400.
I saw little girls getting their hair braided too. I think depending on how little you want your braids, it costs more or less since it is more or less time intensive.

Re: African-American Moms or Moms with SUPER curly hair
I have boys but I can speak to my own haircare. It's definitely important to keep natural AA hair conditioned and moisturized. It will make styling and maintenance much easier. I've heard really good things about Carol's Daughter Kids products for unprocessed hair. The products can be purchased online or at Sephora and Macy's.
Like LeShellem said, doing twists while the hair is till wet is cute for little girls. If she wants something that will last 3 or 4 days she should try to learn how to cornrow (I'm pretty sure you'd find videos on youtube). Cornrows can be as simple 4-5 rows down the back or more styled into ponytails.
I go to this forum sometimes for hair care tips. They have a forum for Child hair care and styling

take her to one of the eleventy billion salons on Flatbush Ave. there are at least 2 or 3 right off of 5th.
your sister could talk to the stylist about what will work best for her daughters hair. and at the very least they will know how to cut it.

Taylor's hair is like that more so than older DD. She has Black, Irish and Chinese hair that can do cute curly or Afro in a quick minute. I use BioSilk Silk therapy, Carols Daughter or Just for me conditioner/detangler spray. Twist when damp or slightly wet and it produces great curls.

Tell her to use Carol's Daughter hair products. This is what I have been using in my DD hair and it makes it very soft and manageable.

Re: African-American Moms or Moms with SUPER curly hair
I have to second the carol's daughter I also use Miss Jessies or Kinky-Curly products it helps to enhance the natural wave pattern in the hair
the twists when damp is a good idea and a cute look
Also I suggest washing the hair once for the week as curly hair dries out AA hair need moisturizer and conditioner

I was thinking this. They live in Seagate, so she can also go to one of the salons on Mermaid Avenue. She is 8 months pregnant and having a really difficult and painful pregnancy, so I'm not sure when she'll be able to bring her. I would offer , but she also gets easily offended and would say something like "what, you think something is wrong with her hair?" Sigh...that's family for ya...
I think I will get her a basket of Carol's Daughter's products like some of the other girls mentioned as a start..
By the way Ophelia, I went to Lulu's on 5th and Bergen the other day just to browse and ended up spending 50 bucks on 3 barrettes and 2 pairs of sunglasses. The barrettes weren't marked and I had already fallen in love with them. If you have a girl, you must go there!
