Algebra AIS - Math Teachers please help
Has anyone ever taught an AIS type class?
I am a little annoyed because when I interviewed for my new school I was under the impression it was either algebra or geometry.
I am going to have some students 3 times a week and others twice a week.
My classes will be mixed 9th and 10th graders. The 9th graders are students they are predicting will need help in Algebra based on 8th grade scores. The 10th graders are those who got less than a 75% on the Algebra regents, but are taking geometry at the same time.
Now on top of that, I need to the the problem based learning - which I never did before. I am so stressed right now. I have no idea how I am going to run this class.
He wants me to review topics that cause troubles in Algebra, but half of the kids haven't had algebra yet.

id do LOTS of assessing. start with a very in-depth pre-assessment that checks for prior knowledge and skills learned back to middle school. after you identify individual student strengths and weaknesses, then you can move forward. keep lots of data on your students. track their specific progress and keep assessing. you may want to use a skills checklist that organizes each specific skill and whether each student has mastered it or not. good luck!

You may want to look at CPM math....that is a strong problem solving foundation...I would also structure your class so that the over lapping days are instructional days and on the independant days they work on math porfolios that reflect the math curriculm

Yes! Do this. I had this class last year. In February they switched days meaning the 3x became 2x and vice versa. I did a lot of basics. I got a pre Algebra book and started from the beginning. I thought I was wasting my time but OMG - they knew nothing. Not even, I swear, the difference between odds and evens. I taught them how to tell if a number was divisible by 2,3,5 (yeah - didn't know that either) and believe it or not, I did multiplication quizzes with them. Once October came around and they started really working in their "real" math class and I spent about 11 years on equations. The cups and chips method works great. Oh, and graphing a line. That is always a huge one, too.
The important thing is to create an environment where they aren't afraid of math and aren't constantly reminded of the fact that they are weak in math. Find small victories for all of them and they will learn anything you can teach them.
