Aluminum wiring - fixable or deal breaker?
We found out the house that we love and want to buy has some aluminum wiring. About 1/3 of the circuits are aluminum. We had an electrician look at it and he said that using purple wire nuts and other stuff, things are up to code and the house is definitely safe. But I am reading all sorts of stuff on the internet about this and it sounds like buying a house with aluminum wiring is a risk. I know nothing about this subject and don't know many people who do.
Does anyone have experience, or know of anyone I can talk to about this so I can make an educated decision?
TIA

We had the same problem when we bought our house a few months ago. It sounded really scary at first.when we looked into it we found that most of the 'older' homes (more than 30ish) on long island are going to have the aluminum wiring. When they were all built this was the standard. As long as everything is up to code, the correct fuses and everything was used it will be ok. If you are still really nervous you can try to get an electrical inspection. We were going to do that but when I realized that both sets of parents houses had aluminum wiring and we grew up with it, it became less of an issue for me. good luck!

oh ya, you can always call an electrician just to ask a few questions. if the person is nice enough they wont mind helping out!
