Am I being petty?
I didn't take DH's last name. I suspect his family didn't agree with that but whatever. They never said anything about it or made a stink. We just got a thank you and a X-mas card from DH's brother and SIL addressed to DH's first name and my first name and our address. I felt that was a bit rude and I'm a little irritated at it (not enough to really do anything but I said to DH that I thought that they should've addressed it to DH's full name and my full name, like his sister did). Now we just got into a fight about me not liking his family (which I'm not really a fan of them for various reasons but again whatever-we don't see them that often). Should I have just kept my mouth shut? Now he's not speaking to me.

Re: Am I being petty?
im gonna be honest!
I think you are. Dont let it get to you!
I have gay cousins I mail their envelopes sometimes joe and john. And My friend who has a son lives with her mom (who got remarried) So they have 3 different last names in the house so sometimes I just write EVERYONE
My sister-in-law has 4 kids so when I mail a christmas card I just write their last name on the envelope cause really its for all of them

Re: Am I being petty?
I would let it go - maybe the didnt know how to handle the names on the card.
Some of DHs family doesnt even include my name anywhere on the card (Aunts and Uncles do this)

Honestly, I don't think it's that big of a deal. I could see you being more upset if they addressed it "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith" and purposely excluded your last name while using his.

Re: Am I being petty?
To be completely honest, I agree with june262004 in that I think you are.
It's possible that the addresser forgot your last name and felt awkward to sign it "to John Doe & Jane".

I agree!! I think they may have been a bit confused as to what to write and felt this was a safe bet!!

Re: Am I being petty?
O.k. Thanks for the responses, ladies! I'll let it go! And I guess I should apologize to DH for the argument (damn, I hate when I'm wrong!)

It's good of you to be able to say when you're wrong. I'm really not good at that! I'm sure your DH will appreciate it.

Re: Am I being petty?
I have been married for 6 years and my husband and I have different last names, pretty much all the holiday cards that we get come addressed to Mrs & Mrs Hislastname. It doesn't bother me at all because I think that most people don't really know what else to put...even his parents sent cards to that name. My surname is double-barrelled and no one puts cards to Mr Hislastname & Mrs Mylastname-Hislastname
The majority of our friends with kids aren't married and don't have the same last names, so I always address their cards to the Smith-Jones Family...but loads of people don't know what to do and just do whatever they think is simplest.
I wouldn't be offended...I think people are uncomfortable and worried about offending people that they just do what they think won't offend!

I'm typically not able to admit when I'm wrong! But with DH I will! Thanks again everyone! I kinda knew I was being silly but needed to hear (from someone other than DH!)
