Am I nuts? School related- updated with response
I just dropped dd off at prek. The parents are always complaining that we have to wait outside for drop off and pick up because they would rather the door just be left open. I believe the door should be locked always but I am certainly in the minority. Today the door was propped all the way open. I waited in the parking lot until everyone else left which almost 20 mins after school started and than I got out and closed the door. I'm furious that a parent would prop open the door. My child is my life and there is no way I could leave there with the door opened. Everyone else left with the door wide open. The school is on a pretty busy road and you could clearly see the door is wide open from the street. If I didn't stay there and close the door who knows how long it would stay open. I plan on saying something to the teachers when I pick my dd up. Am I just crazy and over worried? I just feel like there are so many nuts in the world you can't leave a door to school open like this but the other parents can't stand the inconvenience of having to wait for someone to open it.
Update- I spoke with the teachers (there isn't any administration there) and they were shocked and told me they will be making an another announcement monday that the door must be locked at all times. I told the teachers that I was very upset and I can't understand why other parents want the door left open. I also told them that I stayed there for 20 mins after school started and no one even came to check the door. I explained that I can't leave my dd there is this is going to be happening. They have reassured me it won't and someone will be assigned to check the door after school starts.

Re: Am I nuts? School related
I would be calling the school right now. It is not acceptable. The safety of your child (and the other children) is the most important thing.
ETA: and the fact that no one in the school noticed that the door was open would upset me as well.

Well I doubt the teachers would know it was even open because they don't come out of the classrooms really into the hall. I plan on saying something if this is going to be something that continues I'm pulling my dd out. I just can't leave her there if the other parents really want the for open.

Re: Am I nuts? School related
I would call the main office and tell them, and not the teachers. The school should really have someone who goes around after drop off and makes sure all the doors are locked.

I would absolutely mention it to the principal/head of the school. That is completely unacceptable.

At DS's school everyone goes in through one entrance. The door is unlocked at 8:00 am to let everyone in. There is a security guard that watches them come in.
The door is then locked at 8:15 by a the guard. If you are late you have to be buzzed in by security at that point.

I would absolutely tell the principal or whoever is in charge. The teachers might not have been able to see the door from their classrooms. But you should make the school aware so they can make sure that doesn't happen again.

You are 100% right.
Parents can be so obnoxious, follow the rules and regulations of the SCHOOL they are there for a reason.

Re: Am I nuts? School related
Wow, not nuts at all!
I'm SHOCKED that someone propped open the door. People make me sick. They risk their (and other peoples) child's welfare because they don't want to wait 1 minute for a door to be opened?!
Totally unacceptable and I would def. call the school to complain. There should be a guard or someone at that door.

I would be calling the principal. And if it happened again, I'd be calling the superintendent. Completely unacceptable in today's day and age. Someone should be monitoring all school doors.

I agree, you are 1000% right!! Im surprised no one was at the door, was this after the the students will be considered late that the door was still left open unattended? In DS school someone is at every door while the students walk in after all grades enter the building with the teacher then the doors ae closed and the student has to enter through the front door and get a pass in the main office.
But DS school has a very strict "closed" door policy.
ETA:Is this a school just for pre-K or is it a school with other grades and pre-K? Just curious too as to why parents want the door open, because I can see why parents of older kids would want the door open, even though I still thinks its a big no no.

Re: Am I nuts? School related
My child's preschool would never allow that. That is asking for trouble. Why do the parents want the door open?

It is a private prek with 2-5 year olds. The parents don't want to wait outside. They think its too cold.

In my eyes that is not enough. I would want someone assigned to be near and /or check the door before school starts and while parents are dropping off students. I would want someone at the door making sure only the people who should be coming in are coming in

I'm a teacher, and I don't understand how they wouldn't have someone assigned to the door during drop off. We have one teacher at the only doors students come in until 8:05 (when school officially begins). Once he leaves, that door is shut and locked. All of our classrooms and doors to the outside are locked at ALL times.

I totally understand ! I am having an issue right now where I live ( in NC) they never have there doors locked and you can come in and out freely! Are they waiting for something bad to happen before they lock the doors? It is so lax down here I feel uncomfortable !

It's not the school staff who are lax it's parents which I really don't understand. My number 1 priority in life is to keep my girls safe. I don't care how it inconveniences my life and I don't think it's a bother to wait outside for 5 mins either.
You should bring up your concerns with the school Adams get others parents to join you. Maybe if enough of you sat something they will take action!

It may be the parents that are being lax but in my opinion it is the schools job to make sure that the doors are shut and not proped open and that your child is safe. Telling parents not to do it is not enough.
