Re: Am I The Only Parent That Doesn't Own a Portable DVD Player?

When I was little, I went to restaurants with my parents, we drove to Florida and to Texas, I flew on a plane to Bermuda...all without TV...I read books, I did puzzles, I colored, I talked to my parents...and that is what I want for DD...

Ding ding! Like someone else pointed out, in the car they are forced to talk to you. I don't want my kids to "tune me out" for the TV. I think it's a bad habit to start.

I am def. not for it in the car (for me personally) but like other posters mentioned - why not have one on long trips to occupy a child once you have read through all the books, sang all the songs, and played with all the toys. Helps them to relax and gives everyone around them a break.

Oh - and we also use ours as a radio at night (on vacations) bc DS sleeps to a particular CD.

Right now we don't own one - but we are considering it for the flight to WDW in Sept. We are only considering one for the flight b.c DD likes to run around and DH thought when we run out of books and toys it will keep her quiet so she doesn't bother other passengers. I refuse to put one in our car - DD really doesn't watch tv - but on rare occasions will watch a few minutes of something here or there. On car rides I prefer to sit and talk.

We don't have Tivo or DVR here either.

My mom owns one, the only time we really ever used it was on our LONG LONG drive down to Florida! I was grateful she had it for that trip, but was so sick of watching DS's playhouse disney dvd!

I have one ONLY for airplane rides. I have no intention of bringing it anywhere but very long trips.

I have one, but I had it before I had DS and got it as a gift. I am not sure if I will use it while travelling or not, he is only 7 months old now, so I don't see any need for it yet.....

We don't have one and don't plan to get one either.

DD doesn't watch any TV and won't until she is at least 2.

We have one and we got it way before DS was even born.
We use it for him for our trips to FL.
We take trips to NJ and Greenport and I haven't used the player for those "short" trips.
On our FL trip, we only broke it out when he was getting antsy and did NOT want to be in the car anymore.
We brought tons of toys with us that entertained him all the way to NC.
NC is where we broke it out for about 30mins and it calmed him down a bit.

I don't think anyone has the right to flame you unless they live in a TV free atmosphere, even then its none of their business.

I don't see the difference in watching TV at home or watching it in a car.

Thanks!! Madison hates the car so if it is not on she has a meltdown, so to make me sane while driving it is on the whole ride even to the food store!

I have to agree, why should a parent feel afraid of flames on what I consider such an innocuous topic? It's not health or safety related... I can understand how those issues really get emotions running high. But a DVD player? Why flame over such a minor issue? Nobody is making YOUR kid watch it... let the other mommies enjoy a peaceful dinner if that helps them get one

(I don't even have one myself, so I'm not trying to justify it... I just think it's such a silly thing to criticize)

I don't think I saw a single post where someone was criticizing Chat Icon No need to try to create drama where there isn't any Chat Icon
