While it's in Queens, what kind of implications do you think it will have for Long Island?

I'd assume it's going to make traffic on and off the island worse. It will probably raise property values in NYC, such that more people are priced out of those areas and look to more housing in Nassau and Suffolk.

Thoughts? Concerns?

Minimal. Housing prices in NYC are already cost prohibitive for most. There will probably be more housing built in LIC, likely rentals. I would guess the vast majority of employees will use public transportation which is why I don’t think there will be a significant uptick in traffic. LIC is much like the city in that most people do not drive there if they can help it.

All this.
This doesn't concern me nearly as much as the constant building of condos and apartments on LI to pack in as many people as possible per square inch and so that they can and add as many cars as possible to the already bursting roadways.

Agreed. Parking in LIC is already a nightmare and there are a lot of transit options since there's multiple subway lines, buses, and LIRR stops in the area.

Re: Amazon HQ in Long Island City

Yeah actually, LIC is an ideal location for it. Lots of mass transit options, less crowded than Manhattan and not in the traffic nightmare hell that is LI

Hope the MTA finds some money to put into the subway/LIRR to get these people to the jobs.

But the mass transit options are already crowded.
The 7 train - forget about getting on it during rush hours. I avoid it like the plague. There are only 2 LIRR stops, one in LIC which doesn't go thru to the city and Hunterspoint. Talk about building a new stop in the Sunnyside rail yards.
Buses, eh, with the existing traffic, don't move well.

It also depends upon WHERE in LIC Amazon will place their HQ. Closer to Queens Plaza or closer to Hunterspoint / Vernon / Jackson. Big difference between them.

Trust me, I'm aware of transit conditions, I lived in Sunnyside for years (46th Street) and commute from LI through Hunterspoint/Woodside regularly. My point is there are a LOT of transit options for people coming from different places. And really the 7 train is no worse than the E at rush hour. If I'm not on the E train, I'm on the 7... daily.

ETA: And my commute through Hunterspoint is a cakewalk compared to Penn Station!

I agree. The OP asked about impact on LI, which I think will be nonexistent.

As for LIC, mass transit will become more crowded. Ive never taken the 7 train during rush hour but I 100% believe it is a sh!tshow.

Regardless, I think 25,000 jobs being brought to NY is a good thing.

I think it's a capitalist catastrophe. Cuomo essentially locked the residents and local government out of having a say. I am sure DeBlasio & Co are getting kickbacks galore.

Environmentally it will be disastrous for the area. Many areas will be horribly flooded in just a few decades or underwater completely from the enormous human impact.

There is only so much this island can take. Amazon doesn't need the precious time and resources being spent on creating this new HQ. The people already living here do.

I think it's going to price even more people out of the city.

In our area, a lot of people buying houses are coming from the city. I know it's not unusual, but it seems like whole communities moving out of the city and relocating to LI. To them, they get more for their money on LI than staying in Queens and frequently can make cash offers, so I think you're going to see even more of that, which then will add to our overcrowding. Those condos that are being built on the island will sell out, and then more will be built, because they're profitable.

I think you're going to see a massive change in the demographics of Long Island, and only time will tell whether that's accepted or if it causes conflict. This was already happening, but I think the Amazon HQ may speed things up and cause more people to leave sooner.

I hope you’re right. I hope the demographics do change. However, I don’t think there will be a mass exodus of people who live in LIC moving to Long Island. I could be wrong, but I just don’t think that will be the case. I don’t think there are as many people clamoring to come to LI as you seem to believe. I mean, almost everyone I know lives in the city and trust me, they’ll beg, borrow and steal before they’ll move out here.

Regardless, I think complaining that people from the city are moving to LI is ridiculous. Who else would you like to move here?

I am from Queens and like you said would beg, borrow and steal to stay lol People have been priced out of the city for a very long time and have been moving to LI for a very long time, like my grandparents generation, this will not change anything it has been going on

It all depends where you live. My town is being infiltrated with people moving west from Queens and I know that a lot of the surrounding towns are as well. They are coming here for better schools and larger homes/properties. It has already driven our home prices up a lot in the past couple of years even compared to the across the board increases on Long Island.
And all of the people that I know that have kids in the city eventually leave and come back to Long Island because they don't want their kids growing up in the city. I am sure there are plenty of people that want to stay in the city. I don't happen to know them but I would never say they don't exist because I don't happen to know them.

And as far as who else would we like to move here? I would be fine if no one else moved here! I would be fine if a lot of people moved away from here!!!!

I'm not complaining that people from the city are moving here. Sorry if it came across that way. I'm complaining that more people are moving here.

As I said, this movement has already been happening as areas in the city gentrify, costs go up, and communities move out to the suburbs for relatively lower cost of living, but I think Amazon in LIC may speed it up in Queens, which has resisted some of the gentrification.

I'm all for diversity on Long Island, and I hope people will become more accepting as their exposed to more cultures/religions. As I said, my area has a lot of people who moved from the city, and it's been driving up our house prices, which is great as someone who already owns a home (maybe not great for renters). A lot of the older people are upset about it, but I'm hopeful in time when they get know more people that they'll become more accepting (or at least the younger people will be).

My concern is just more people = more congestion, but I guess only time will tell if over all more people are moving to Long Island, because you also have a Baby Boomers retiring and some are moving off the island, so maybe my concern will be unfounded.

LIC and Queens in general is very expensive and has been for some time, many/most of my friends have moved to LI bc they could only afford a coop in Queens and a house in parts of LI

Long Island as a whole is very diverse, it's just that people tend to live in the same areas as people like themselves as far as ethnicity and religion go. And from what I have seen the people from Queens or the city in general tend to move to areas that have people in their ethnicity/religious groups. So people moving from Queens or the city is not going to make the Island more diverse as far as I am concerned. What really needs to happen is that each town needs to become more diverse. My town is actually pretty diverse now whereas it was once a pretty Irish/Italian Catholic area.

I think it's great and will bring many more jobs to the NY area. Many companies have offices in LIC that you wouldn't even know about. I don't believe traffic will be worse because many people will be using public transportation. I'm happy LIC got chosen.

But in all seriousness, what makes you so certain these people will move to LI? LI is not the only suburb. They can go to Westchester, Rockland, Jersey, southern Connecticut. They can go to eastern Queens, they can go to the Bronx, they can go to Staten Island. LI isn’t the only game in town.

Also, you weren’t the poster who said this, but LIC and the surrounding areas are quite gentrified. I was at a rooftop party in LIC over the summer and the 2 bedroom condos were going for nearly $1m. I feel like there are VERY few parts of the boroughs that aren’t gentrified at this point.

Obviously LI is not the only option, but I think people from Queens frequently move LI because it's the closest suburb to Queens, e.g., if they have family still in queens, it's not over a bridge to visit.

Because historically people from Queens tend to move to LI and people from the Bronx tend to move to Westchester.

You have a very one sided opinionated view of things based on your own experience. You hate Long Island but to many it is a BIG step up from living in Queens. I, personally, don't know one person that lived in Queens and wanted to stay there. I went to a city school and knew a lot of people that grew up in Queens. Only one of them still lives there and he is single with no children living in Forest Hills. You could not pay me a million dollars to live in Queens. To me, Queens is a filthy, overcrowded mess with mostly horrible schools. To each his own though. That's why I live on Long Island and not Queens. It always confuses me why you live here and not Queens. Just go back! And if you can't afford it, like you said, there are plenty of other suburbs!
