Do you recommend buying one?
Thanks

Re: Amazon Kindle?
I absolutely love mine!!! I recommend them to anyone who is an avid reader because it makes it so easy. I have the older version with the 3G. I think they sell now for like $189. I bought mine at Target

Re: Amazon Kindle?
we just got one for my dad. The $139 version with wireless on it. its so much thinner and lighter than the original versions, i cant believe how slim it is. Im now considering getting one for myself..maybe for xmas.
its great for those who commute and dont want to carry books.
as someone who worked in print book production, i cant believe i wrote that..LOL

Re: Amazon Kindle?
I'm all for the nook. I have it and I'm obsessed with getting library cards in my area so I can download FREE books. I have been reading more than I have ever done before. I was able to get all the Steig Larsson books within a few weeks.
I still buy books but getting the free library books is terrific.
I love my nook!

Re: Amazon Kindle?
I hesitated between the Kindle and Nook. Both have great reviews but in the end I picked the Nook.
Free ebook from the library.
After a few books, it pays for itself. You don't have to keep buying books.
The kindle is not compatible with the library software.
ETA: this is a great purchase. I rediscovered reading with it.
- No space needed for all those books in the house (and the endless cluter of already read books) - You can read the books anywhere and download from anywhere too. - You don't need to bring loads of books with you when you go in vacation, commute in train, flying, etc... It's all in one device.

the reasons you love it, especially the library compatibility is the main reason if I had to do it again, Id get the nook.

Barnes and Noble (Nook) has a text book program. I think it's called NookStudy.

Re: Amazon Kindle?
You download Adobe Reader Editions to your PC. You go to digital overdrivie, find your library, sign up with your library card and start shopping. Once you check out a book, you download it and it goes straight into ADE. Then you just drag and drop into your Nook.
If a book is currently out, you request them and when they are available, you will receive and email from the library that they are ready for download.
You just click the link and download the book. You can have 5 books out at a time and they are on your nook for 14 days.
There is a nook thread here on LIF.
I took a class with Jonathan @ the Manhasset location. They have it once a month...and he was so great b/c he helped me with the free books as well.
The difference for me was the library books. I don't think the ipad or kindle supports ADE which is what the library system is using for downloading books. I think if you want free books for Kindle, you have to change the format in your PC.
I got the wifi version but for a lttle more you can get 3G. Any questions, let us know! I love it.

Free books instead of 10 dollars a pop isn't enough of a pro?
I've read ~45 books so far - I've paid for 1. So I've spent 10.00 instead of 450.00.
But since you asked, a few off the top of my head -
Small color touchscreen
No clunky keyboard
Free items at B&N if you bring your Nook in the store
Lend certain titles to friends
Read any book in store for free for an hour per day
Play with a real working version before you buy (not one that is locked to a demo)
Expandable memory
Changable battery
Return to store, tech support at store

I think all the BN stores have them in stock, plus they usually have someone there who can answer questions for you while you play with the demo model. You can call ahead to make sure they have it. I wish I'd gone to the store to get mine, I bought mine online and was tortured waiting for it to be delivered. I checked the shipping status a few times a day like a complete psycho.

Go to Barnes and Nobles. You can see 1st hand and they are knowledgeable about it and any questions you may have.

Re: Amazon Kindle?
The B&N on Old Country Rd has a revamped section that now looks like an Apple store.
The Manhasset store has the class.
