Amnio Questions
DH and I are considering an amnio in the next few weeks. I'm curious about a few things:
Does it hurt? How long does it take? How do you feel afterwards? How long for the results? It done by my reg OB or by a specialist?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Does it hurt? I guess it depends on your tolerance of pain. Some will say yes, others will say no. I'm a HUGE baby when it comes to pain and if I had to rate it on a scale of 1-10, I'd say it was probably about a 7
How long does it take? It depends on how cooperative your baby is. They need to do a sono first to determine where the baby is, how active the baby is at that time so they can find the optimal spot to insert the needle as far away from the baby as possible. The whole process for me was probably about 30 minutes only because DD wouldn't stop moving. The actual Amnio procedure itself is probably less than a minute if that once they insert the needle.
How do you feel afterwards? I felt okay, but was told to stay off my feet the remainder of the day as well as the following day. No lifting, etc...I had a "pinching" feeling at the injection site for about a day.
How long for the results? They say about 14 days. We had a scare which is why we did the Amnio and requested the FISH results which we had in less than 2 days. Those were preliminary results which were able to just tell us the baby did not have Downs or Trisomy (also confirmed the sex) We got the remaining results a week later. As a side note, some insurances won't pay for the FISH results, so we paid out of pocket, just for the peace of mind since it was such a stressful time for us.
Was it done by your OB or specialist? We had to go to a high risk Dr., but I was seeing one anyway in conjunction with my OB because I was high risk.
HTH... if you have more questions, FM me!
