An open letter to the Red States
Dear Red States:
We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware, that includes California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss. We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama. We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms. Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq , and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines, 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT. With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia. We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the war, the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.
Finally, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.
Peace out, Blue States

Re: An open letter to the Red States
Now the question is...can we formally submit this to someone?
Also, as a wine lover, I am offended by only 95% of quality wines being from blue states...where are the 5% coming from? I don't think I've ever had a quality wine from Texas!

Re: An open letter to the Red States
Not funny IMO. There are a lot of factual errors. It's condescending. It makes sweeping generalizations. Red vs. Blue, North vs, South, City vs. Country. This letter is as bad as Sarah Palin's yammering about the "Pro-America" parts of the country. It's ignorant. When are we going to learn that this is EXACTLY the type of stuff that is contributes to the problems of this country. As dems we're always so proud of ourselves about how tolerant and progressive we are. Where's the tolerance in this letter? How about instead of bashing, we learn about the PEOPLE in the red states. They're a lot like the oh so superior people of the Northeast and "New California". They love their families, they're scared of what's ahead, they enjoy fine wine, good food, and the arts. They worry about the environment, they race for the cure and they love sports. They go to great universities, they play musical instruments, and they spoil their dogs. Yes, they have different traditions, religions, and some are really fond of their pick-up trucks. And, yes, some bash the blue states, the liberals, and the North. This letter dismisses a HUGE portion of this amazing and complex country. It's sad and pathetic. It makes me ashamed to be a Democrat. I'm sorry that I'm up on my soapbox. I'm just so tired of this type of thing (on both sides!). United we stand, divided we fall. It's cliche but true.

If you didn't want to start drama, why post this. It is very condescending to anyone who is a Republican, and there are Republicans on this board. Not nice at all.

It's like telling a religous or racial joke - until things like that end and people dont find them funny - it will continue

Of course it is...but it's one that offends some people and I think that can be respected.
I wonder what the response would be if it were a racist joke...would your comment be the same?

Re:u An open letter to the Red States
did you honestly think that wasn't going to cause drama? calling certain states "slave states"?
Love the line..."We get all the happy families. You get the single moms" - no that's not offensive.

There are a BUNCH of republicans on this site.
Just check out the billions of politically related threads that have been posted in the last six months.
You're not alone by a long shot.

Re: An open letter to the Red States
Stuff like this makes me want to change my voter registration from democrat to republican...joke or not.
We are all supposed to be accepting and tolerant of everyone, until there is a group of people that differs from you. No matter how you swing it, it's not funny.
I used to live in NC (for a short time), and trust me, they are no different from any of us NY-ers...except they don't tailgate as much.

Also forgot to add that of the top 25 states where people give an above average percentage of their income, all but one (Maryland) were red states.

Seriously folks, i really just thought it was funny - thats all. I by no means posted this as 'factual' and i know its full of probably very incorrect sweeping generalizations. Really, I do. I was just voicing one side of a heated debate and adding some humor to it. No offense meant to anyone who lives in a red state, but i guess in this environment people are already heated up and will take offense no matter what i say. apologies to anyone who was offended, but really - its a joke, thats it.
p.s. - as for baseball, half of the players are from outside the country (puerto rico, dominican republic) and the red states can have the Yankees if you want 'em, i'm keeping the Mets and the Sox!

Re: An open letter to the Red States
First of all, I get that this is supposed to be a joke. But I don't find it funny at all and I am a Democrat!!
My following comments are not directed at the original poster.
I am originally from the northeast but I live in Texas now. I can tell you that it isn't all cowboy boots and yeehaw. It is ignorant to be dismissive of the southern states just because of where they are geographically located. Ignorance is everywhere.
