is it not true that in the UK, the program may be run by the Gov't, but paid for by the tax payer?
All government run programs are paid for by the tax payer. Everywhere. That's the point of taxes.
yes, I know that. so no more Gov't funded anything if we go on socailzed care. the taxpayer bears all the burden.
If a nationalized healthcare program was put in place, everything would be government funded. The same way clinics and mammogram buses etal are currently paid for by the government - which is funded by taxpayer dollars. I don't really get your point...

Re: Another political topic - would you want socialized (or universal) healthcare in the US?
Interestingly enough my mother's dear friend that lives in Scotland was at my house for breakfast this morning as part of her summer visit to the US. She was telling me her oldest son is thinking of moving to Paris with his girlfriend. I asked how that would work with Healthcare. She explained that as part of the union they would be able to receive care in France as well. She told me the healthcare system in the UK is "destroyed" because there are so many immigrants. She said the system is out of money. She explained that 99% of the immigrants don't speak English so when they go to the doctor a government interrupter goes with them, expenses that like are sucking the system dry. She now buys private healthcare because she has a heart problem & feels unsafe using the public doctors.
I can only imagine how that would all play out here.

Posted by MrsPorkChop what about cancer - how can i "protect myself" from that? lose weight? i am at my target weight and i eat very healthily.
i needed a breast bioipsy, i got it in a matter of days. i needed an ultrasound, i got one NEXT DAY.
you can't do that in these foreign country. waiting lists are WEEKS.
Imagine waiting WEEKS to find out if a Lump is cancerous? Imagine what that waiting , itself, does to your stress level and immune system, just from the worrying?? Sorry, but i am 100% against universal health care.
Sorry, but you would not have to wait for a test like that to be done. If there was even a possibility of cancer they would not put you on a waiting list. I am not in the NHS, but the system here is based on the NHS and quite similar at times.
ETA: my MIL had breast cancer a few years back- it was taken care of ASAP, with a mastectomy being done shortly after she was diagnosed. She did not have to wait weeks.

she choose to have a baby
no comment
Was waiting for that response. i would fight for the freedom to be able to have a child anytime i wanted I don't want socialized medicine or the government coming in to tell me when i can have a child or how many children i can have. That's what is great about america our ability to make our own choices!!!
I don't understand what you mean by this? Socialised medicine does not tell you how many children you can have.
In fact, they give you a 'baby bonus' when you have a child here for contributing to the population.

I am quite surprised by the amount of people who are talking about socialized medical services bases on 1 country or 1 person they talk to.
People are NOT dieing in other countries because they have to wait weeks to see a dr.
I don't know where all this pre-conception comes from.
I mean.... don't you have to wait to see your specialist too? Do you think you can just see him/her the same day your call?

Absolutely... but when my cousin had found a lump in her breast and was told to wait 6 WEEKS for her mammo.? turn out she had stage 4 breast cancer. that's not right. or my uncle who was losing his memory, was making mistakes at work, etc. etc. and got a date for a cat-scan and other tests four MONTHS later? turns out he is now in early onset Aheizmer's. what if it was cancer or something else? i have personally seen people die due to the wait.
granted for things less important, socialized medicine is fine. it is great for preventative care and basic things. but for things like scans, x-rays, etc. it's not good. so like any system, there are pros and cons.
also, each country in Europe has a different system, so there are some that are better than others. actually, the big debate in Ireland right now (where my family is) is how to incorporate private medicine into the country because they are seeing how for certain things, the socialized medicine just doesnt' cut it. neither of the two ways are perfect.
