Re: Another school shooting
This saddens me too much. When Sandy hook happened, DS was a first grader. I was down and sad for a week. I can't believe this keep happening. It's just too sad. I can go on. I came to this country feeling I would feel better and safer than in my home country. I don't know if getting older makes me feel scare of many more things, but I wish my DS could ride the train without me freaking out, or could go to school without me reading those horrible news.

Another school shooting
Firearms surpassed auto accidents as the leading cause of death for children in April this year. They are the problem. Why does anyone need a semi automatic weapon?!?!? The don’t.
Have any of you worked at a school? We have psychologists, counselors, buzz in doors, school resource officers, etc. We have everything you listed. It’s all there. The elementary school where the tragedy occurred had all of those things. They had police right there and they couldn’t stop him.

I agree, nobody needs a semi automatic weapon. And other than a mass casualty event - I can’t see what a civilian would use them for.
And those who have weapons need to properly secure and store them as that is another issue leading to children dying from guns.
I’m trying not to follow too much but I saw a picture of a little girl today and her dad was on the news last night not knowing where to find her. Seeing that his worst fears were realized was heartbreaking. And all of the pictures of the kids that were taken earlier that day at their honor roll ceremony.

Re: Another school shooting
Beyond heartbreaking. Senseless. Frustrating. And until we start addressing mental health and taking it seriously, it will happen again. But we won’t.
I am tired of everyone fighting with each other about guns. We have a right to bear arms. We shouldn’t need to prove our reasons. That being said, I am not opposed to gun control laws.
But the bottom line is that the American people do not make gun control laws. Congress can. And they haven’t. Eight years since Sandy Hook and several school shootings later and I do not even recall Congress bringing a gun control proposal to a vote. We need to ask ourselves why that is instead of vilifying each other.

Yes, because arming security and teachers (!) with more guns is not a solution. There have been studies that show it does not work.
I’m really tired of the “2nd amendment, blah, blah.” First off, the language is not clear and outdated and needs to be updated, especially the “being” clause. That form of grammar is outdated. Secondly, it is the right to form a militia against tyranny, which isn’t an issue like it was in the late 1700s. Last I checked 10 year olds are not trying to overthrow the government. If someone is going to sit there and say my right to bear arms is more important than a bunch of elementary schools, then something is lacking.
But thoughts and prayers, amirite?
It didn’t change after Sandy Hook. Why would it now?

Exactly. Obviously if they had these precautions in place, they were not using or following them. I was at my HS yesterday and there is no way anyone could just push their way into the school.
That being said, there is nothing besides building a 20 foot perimeter wall around a school, search every entering student and staff and allowing absolutely no visitors to enter during the school day, that would totally protect the students. If someone is crazy enough, they will find a way to reach them. The answer is gun regulations.

I was listening to a live interview with the lieutenant this morning. He said the door was not locked. That is how the perpetrator gained access. Then he was approached by the school resource officer who was in fact armed with a weapon. But they have not determined whether or not any gunfire was exchanged at that point. He also said that there was an exchange of gunfire between the perpetrator and two other police officers who arrived on the scene, and this happened in a hallway prior to him entering a classroom where he barricaded himself and the police could not gain access. No one seems to know how long he was in that classroom before the police knocked the door down. But there are many accounts of parents sitting outside the school pleading with officers to go in and get their babies and hearing gunfire. There seems to be a lot of missing information. But they said they are working through it as per the lieutenant. The whole thing is just horrifying. I cannot imagine standing outside of a school listening to gunfire wanting to go get my child who end up being shot to death with high-powered machine guns. It's absolutely disturbing and heart-wrenching.

Seriously. I could vomit just thinking about it. And then those poor parents who were asked for DNA samples? To know right then and there they can't figure out who your kid is because they are unrecognizable? It makes me so angry that these poor people had to endure this.
You know what else makes me angry? Parents. Don't tell me his family didn't know he was off. As parents, we know our children's flaws. We can pretend they don't exist but we know when they do. If you have a kid who you know is reclusive, hostile, friendless, spends way too much time holed up watching videos or otherwise not a typical kid, get them help! Or at the very least, be all up in their business! WTF.

The Lieutenant also said that the shooter was communicating with a girl from Germany. He had told her previously that he likes to throw dead cats at people's homes. That in itself is indicative of a sociopath. He also was informing her of some of his plan the day of the shooting apparently. The whole thing is just sick

He posted in messenger to a girl that he was going to shoot his grandma, he shot his grandma and that he was going to shoot an elementary school. I do not thing the girl thought it was true and didn't say anything but either way, that is some guilt she needs to live with.
It really doesn't matter if the police shot him or he killed himself. He managed to kill an entire classroom of children and teachers. More guns are not needed. They obviously did not follow or have enough security protocols in the school. The guards were armed and still a classroom was slaughtered.

And hearing that he waltzed in through an unlocked door? That is really negligent on the school's part that someone could get in that easily too

Yes. How can you just walk into a school. This isn't the 1960s. I was at my HS on Tuesday and I had to show my license get buzzed through the first door. Then I had to scan my license and was asked exactly why I was there. They called to verify my meeting prior to letting me through the second door. Once I was in the second door I was escorted by security the office I was visiting.

What I don’t understand is why these people target young children? What part did young, innocent children play in these people’s lives? In their trauma? How do they equate to their mental illness? It just doesn’t make sense. Unless these people are schizophrenics that hear voices telling them to kill children in specific??

From what I read, it was an unlocked back door. He engaged in gun fire, got in through a back door and proceeded down a back hallway where he barricaded himself in a classroom. That classroom was attached or shared a doorway to the other classroom. That was on ABC news.

There is a press conference about this right now. There was no school officer, and the door was just widely unlocked. An hour went by when he was in the school and when they were able to enter and shoot him. An hour. They didn't say at what point the children in the classroom were shot, but this is all so horrific

WTF.
Plus he wrote on social media that he was going to shoot up a school. Not sure if he indicated which one? He was a resident of that area. But I dont know what to believe anymore. Some articles and news reports indicated the shooter was shot by police, and others claim he killed himself??
He posted in messenger to a girl that he was going to shoot his grandma, he shot his grandma and that he was going to shoot an elementary school. I do not thing the girl thought it was true and didn't say anything but either way, that is some guilt she needs to live with.
It really doesn't matter if the police shot him or he killed himself. He managed to kill an entire classroom of children and teachers. More guns are not needed. They obviously did not follow or have enough security protocols in the school. The guards were armed and still a classroom was slaughtered.
And hearing that he waltzed in through an unlocked door? That is really negligent on the school's part that someone could get in that easily too
Exactly! And how did he get in undetected, hiding 2 riffles? I’m assuming he was wearing a coat? How didn’t that look so suspicious??
They kept showing the video on the news the other night and you could clearly see him with a gun walking in the door so the camera picked it up but no one else did.
From what I read, it was an unlocked back door. He engaged in gun fire, got in through a back door and proceeded down a back hallway where he barricaded himself in a classroom. That classroom was attached or shared a doorway to the other classroom. That was on ABC news.
Ahh ok. I just saw him walking in a door, nothing before or after.

Horrible. No school should have any doors unlocked, ever.

I agree about the doors being unlocked. But also, where there is a will there is a way. A sociopath psychotic animal like this would have waited for them to go out on recess or something. And I just can't stop thinking about this. It's so horrific, I work in various schools periodically with children these ages and it's just so heartbreaking. And I just keep reminding my kids over and over if there is a shooter in your school you do not go huddle in the corner. You try to jump out the window or get out by whatever means you can. It's sick and sad that we even have to have these conversations

I don't know if there is a panic button in schools where it can be pressed and the police come instantly but they should have one in all the classrooms and front desk.
And yes, doors should be closed and even windows. I don't like that we now have windows open because of covid.
