Antiiotic/Bowel Movements/Rash Question... Please help...

My son is taking Augmentin for ear infections. Since he has taken it he has SEVERAL bowel movements a day (normally only one). This has caused his very first diaper rash....Chat Icon So sad. Doctor says to give him one capule of Culturelle a day with food to help with the stomach upset. Has anyone ever heard of this? Did this happen to anyone else's DC when they were taking antibiotics??? Please help. I hate that he has been so under the weather for so long. We went 7 months without ONE issue and now he's been sick for almost a month straight...Any advice???? TIA!

awwww.. poor baby! Chat Icon

The culturelle is for your baby's tummy.. antibiotics cause belly aches in some babyies, so that's why your ped is telling you to put the culturelle with his food. It's actually pretty common.

I hope he gets better soon! Chat Icon

Thank you for the information. Has your DC had to take the Culturelle before? And does anyone else have any other ideas? Where do I get Culturelle? Would Walgreens have it?

Augmenten is extremely hard on the stomach. All of my kids get terrible diarrhea from it. I now usually ask for something else because it is that bad.

He took Omnicef for his first round and that didn't work, so that's why he had to take the Augmentin. I hate that he has to take it but it's the only one that has seemed to help with the ear infections.

Same here - when they have something like a really bad ear infection (and two of my kids are hearing impaired so the doctor treats them agressively to make sure there is no further damage done from an infection) we have no choice. But anything other than that I try to steer away from augmenten. But it does seem to work the best.

I know that CVS sells it. My kids haven't because they never had a bad tummy reaction to antibiotics but I have Chat Icon

DD has been on Augmentin twice, always for ear infections that would not heal from Amoxicillan or Omnicef. The first time she was 4 months and had the same reaction you are describing.

Yes my daughter used a milk free version of Culturelle. I got it in a local health food store (I'm not in LI.) It was in the refrigerated section. I would just go to one and ask someone. I would never have found it.

They are in capsule form, so I would open it and mix it in her bottle. I gave it twice a day. Just make sure you do NOT give it a the same time as the Augmentin or it will not work. I'll be honest, it reduced the amount of diarhea but did not end it. Her rash was awful. Is your DC on foods yet? I would give lots of rice, apples and bananas to help bind.

For the rash I only use wet paper towels (no wipes, the alcohol burns), pat dry with a paper towel, tons of Neosporin first, then a cream over it. You really n eed to glob it on. I went through tons of it, but it really helped heal it fast. If the rash looks pimply it may be a yeast rash and Lotrim may work better than the Neosporin. I changed her diapers almost every hour to even keep just the urine off the rash and used the Neosporine and cream with every diaper change.

DD was also JUST on it a 11 months old and was completely fine.

Jackson had awful diarrhea from I think it was Omnicef. I've never heard of culturelle; our doctor recommended Isomil DF, a soy-based formula for diarrhea. That, plus the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) worked like a charm.
For the diaper rash, I used Balmex and you can also have him go diaper free for a bit (if you dare Chat Icon) to get some air to the skin.

Thank you for the good advice. I really appreciate it. He is on foods so I will stick with what you suggested for a few days and hopefully he'll be babysoft again in no time! I just hate that he's uncomfortable, but it probably is hurting me more than him..........Chat Icon

Floristat for Kids....excellent over the counter product...all the pharmacies have it. My ped tellls me to use it everytime we take an antibiotic.

I just dilute with his medicine or mix it with yogurt, milk, water.

We are on Augmentin now and this has worked wonders!
