Any advice on how to get an older child to ditch the paci?

I'm terrible.....DD #1 is 4 and STILL uses a paci at night. So does DS and he is 2 1/2.

How can I get them to ditch them? It's the only thing they are attached to for sleeping

The only advice I can give is to just go cold turkey. It will SUCK for a few days, but eventually they'll get used to it.

As a speech therapist I can attest those things are generally bad news for developing speech sounds when used much further than toddlerhood, so the sooner you get rid of them, the better.

Good luck!

My SIL told me niece that the pacifier fairy was taking it. She took the paci at night and left a present in its place. I think that her DD was between 2.5 and 3 at the time.

The Binky Fairy came to our house to take it. She left DD a few little presents and a nice long note telling her she was a big girl now and that all the little babies needed her binkys now. Suprisingly, DD did awesome and has been binky free since.

I'm a very mean mommy- we just threw them away. DS was very mad at me, but that only lasted about 24 hours.
I kept & hid 1 "for emergencies". We had 1 "emergency" about 2 weeks after they were taken away, he sucked the pacifier for 30 sec & then gave it back & said he didn't want it.

I cut the tips off of DD's when she was 25 months.

After I cut them, I put them back where they were (we had 5 or 6 of them).

Whenever She went to get one she would try to suck on it and they look up at us in surprise. We feigned shock and said, "oh no, it's broken).

This went on for 2 or 3 days-we had maybe 1 or 2 rough nights, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and she ended up throwing them out because they were "broken".

Don't keep any around or you might be tempted to give inChat Icon

I just did it at 3 1/2 and went cold turkey. Believe me when I tell you if there was ever a kid attached to a binky it was mine. She begged for that thing ALL day long and flipped out if she didn't have it. We did tell her she could have a tv in her room if she got rid of it. Her sleep patterns have been a little off since and she cried a little but nothing major. You can do it!

DD just got rid of them a few mths ago - at age 3.5 she was soo attached with her binky, just to sleep. I went cold turkey. 3 nights of he!! and it was over with. she never even asks for it now. I took her to the store after the 1st night she did it w/o binky and let her pick out a big girl gift.

We just did this at a little over 2, this past October and we just went cold turkey. Im not going to lie, it was hell for the first week and rough for the second, but after that, it was over.
