Chicken Pox Vaccine for older child while newborn is in the house
So I had scheduled my 3 1/2 year old to get her chicken pox vaccine next week -she is starting nursery and needs it. I mentioned it to our ped when I had our newborn in the office two weeks ago and he said he would not be happy to vaccinate our DD in case she gets the CP from the vaccine and then could pass it along to our DS who is a newborn.
Has anyone else heard of this or been in this situation?

my dd did get a reacation from the shot. She got a few pox at the injection site. I was told just to make sure i didnt touch the pox and i would be fine.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine for older child while newborn is in the house
I was in the same situation (older child and newborn) when my 3 year old got the CP vaccine. They told me that he would be contagious only if he developed blisters at the injection site, and if that happened, he could only spread it through contact with the blisters (kind of like shingles I guess?), so it would just be important to keep the injection site covered at all times if the blisters appeared.
Hope this helps!

Thanks! I guess he was right then and knowing my 3 1/2 year old it would be a nightmare watching her to make sure she didnt get near my DS if she did get a reaction as she is all over him every day.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. DD#1 should have gotten it while I was pregnant. Even though I've had the chicken pox, I didn't want to take a chance. Then my doctor said we couldn't do it with a newborn in the house. In the end, they both got it together when the younger DD was eligible.

We did as well
DH also had a case of the shingles a few weeks ago (DD is 9 weeks old) and he was allowed to hold the baby. As long as the blisters didn't open everything was okay
