Any coverage for time off after baby is born?
My daughter is expecting in less than 4 weeks. She works p/t, maybe about 12 hours a week in a doctors office. Is there a Family Medical leave act or disability that would pay anything while she's out for maybe 6-8 weeks? If you know of someplace, can you give me the number? thanks so much!

Any coverage for time off after baby is born?
There are no laws/benefits if you are part time unfortunately. In fact, even if you are a full-time employee FMLA only provides protection for non-paid leave.

This is true. When I had DS almost 11 yrs ago I was part time and got zero. I took the 12 weeks off but it was all unpaid. Usually it works if you are full time in a large enough company.

Unfortunately since she is part-time, she won't be eligible to receive any kind of income while she is out of her maternity leave. As others have stated, even some full time employees don't receive FMLA benefits because whether or not its provided/complied with is based on number of employees in a company. Also, FMLA doesn't cover paid leave -- its more of job protection for when you return back.

I worked full time and my company did not provide paid leave, not one penny. I had been paying for disability insurance though so I was able yo collect that. BUT I was full time and I had been already paying insurance for it.

This. I'm full time and my company offers FMLA but I have to use any of my time banked.. vacation, sick, etc. and once that runs out its all unpaid.

Same. I work full time for a very large company and they do offer FMLA, but I didn't qualify for it since I had just started and you had to be there 6 months I think. (I think the company only has to offer this if they have 50 or more employees as well) But FMLA is not paid maternity leave. You have to use your own sick and vacation days unless your company offers maternity leave as a benefit (which most do not lately). FMLA just says they have to hold your job (or an equivalent job) for you. I THINK there is some kind of short term disability from the state though. not sure if you have to work full time to qualify though. I do remember applying for it and getting a check every week for 5 weeks but it was literally peanuts.

That approx. 60 cents you pay into disability will get you a 50% of your average gross wages for the last 8 weeks or a MAXIMUM of $170.00 (whoopty doo) 6 weeks paid for normal delivery and 8 for C-section the first week is a waiting week and they cut checks every 2 weeks.

Yup, I manage a medical practice, I got NO FMLA, I went back to work after 9 weeks (c-section, that was the earliest I was cleared) and honestly, I'm lucky that I had a job when I went back.

This angers me so much. It's absolutely ridiculous.
