Any difference in AMEX/VISA gift cards?
I need to pick one up today. Is there any type of difference (surcharges, restrictions) on an AMEX or VISA gift card? Is one better than the other?
TIA!

No they are exactly the same to use. Just check the activation fee. Amex might be more but I'm not sure.

I think Visa tend to be cheaper, plus you can use them in more places, a lot of places don't take Amex, so I'd go for visa.

Amex stopped with the monthly fee. I believe the activation fees are the same.

I just recieved a $100 Amex card today.
The activation fee was $5.95 and there is a $2.00 monthly service charge after 12 months from purchase date.

This isn't true. I have had some for months and there were no fees reducing the balance.

Re: Any difference in AMEX/VISA gift cards?
amex cost more with activation fees; although I did see some visa /mc gift cards that were just as much to activate (4.95-5.95);
I also have had trouble using amex cards online and not all stores take amex. (Most do, but I believe Walmart and Sams club dont take amex.)

Re: Any difference in AMEX/VISA gift cards?
The only issue i've had with AMEX gift cards are that you have to keep track of the exact balance on there
i.e. if you have a $100 card and use $49 of it on one purchase, when you go to make your next purchase you can't just have them swipe it and it recognizes the amount on there - you have to tell the teller the exact amount to input. It's kind of annoying actually
I actually got one recently, made a purchase, then ended up returning the purchase. They credited the amount back to the card but when i went to go use the card, it came up empty. I called AMEX and was told it takes 7-10 business days for the money to show back up on the card
all in all, they sometimes seem to cause more trouble than they're worth!!
