Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
My 8 week old DS is EBF. I keep hearing about friends who say their child STTN by now. My DS will NEVER sleep more than 3 hours and that is on a good night. I feed him sometime around 8pm, 11pm, 3 am and then sometimes from 3-7am is TORTUROUS sometimes he will go 3 hours sometimes 2.
for those of you that had newborns with less than great sleep habits, when did things get better?

Honestly, while some babies do STTN at that age, I think it's more the exception than the rule. Babies need to eat and grow at that age. BF babies digest the milk more quickly and easily, which is why they tend to eat more often. DS was EBF and didn't STTN until he was 7 months old.

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
Unfortunately, babies who start STTN at 8 weeks old are the exception.
I know you may not want to, but have you thought about supplementing with formula if you need to at night? I know many moms do that (i did that myself).
Otherwise unfortunately you're going to just have to be patient on this. He'll get there.

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
My babies didn't start sleeping longer than 4 hrs until they were around 4-5 months. Even now at 12 months I think I can count on one hand the number of times neither of them have woken up at least once.

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
There's really not much you can do to predict or change your little one's sleeping habits at this age. Yael started STTN, 12 hours, at 5 weeks Alex, on the other hand, didn't sleep for more than 3 hours at a time until she was over 1 year old! It really boils down to temperment and individuality...

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
DS is almost 6 months and still not STTN and he is EBF....I have just adjusted. I go to bed early and get up with him. I pump and bottle, so if I can't do it, I wake DH and he'll go in and feed him. DS is good for about 4 hours normally, 5-6 on a really good night. But no matter how late we've kept him up, how much we've exhausted him, he still doesn't sleep more than 5 hours.

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
DS is 5mths and is EBF. He is not sleeping through the night - he wakes several times. I have adjusted to his needs as I feel at this age I cannot expect anything else from him. Yes i am tired but hey it wont last for ever.....right
Hang in there

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
Those babies that STTN at that age are the exception, trust me. Your baby is right on track with the eating/sleeping schedule.
I also tend to ask those mothers that say their child was "STTN at 5/6/7 weeks" how their child was actually sleeping. You will find that most of them will say "They slept in the bouncy/swing/carseat/on my chest" IMO - that is not true sleeping through the night unless they are in a crib or bassinet. Someplace that does not lull them to sleep. Hell, who wouldn't sleep all night long in a massage chair that vibrates right?!
You will sleep again, I promise (at least that's what I keep telling myself )

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
DD was EBF'd and she didn't start STTN until about 6 months. She was up always 1-2x a night prior to that.
You will get there eventually. Hang in there...I know it's rough in the beginning...we've all been there

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
Your babies sleeping habits seem VERY typical for a breast fed baby!!! You need to feed through the night to keep your supply up and because bf babies need to eat more frequently!
Its exhausing... I know!

ITA-most babies do not STTN at that age.

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
Santino is 15 weeks and although things have def gotten better he is still up 2-3x a night. I am adjusting though and it is not that tiresome anymore. In the beginning when he was up more and wouldn't want to go back down I was so tired, but now that he gets up, eats and goes back down we both wake up well rested

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
honestly? until i sleep trained her at 7 months.
i would hear about babies who had 4 hours stretches at night and i would DREAM about days like those for me. DD was CONSTANTLY nursing at night. it was ridiculous. if she slept more than 2 hours it was a miracle.
when enough was enough i let her CIO and kissed the sleep deprivation good bye. it's a horrible thing. hopefully it'll end soon for you

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
DD didn't STTN until she was about 2. DS is 9 months & I don't see it happening any time soon. Both of my kids are horrible sleepers.
What you described sounds totally normal for a EBF baby at that age.

Re: Any experience with babies NOT being good sleepers?
No throwing flames at me please ...but I'm going to defend all mom's of babies who do STTN at 8 weeks old. I don't believe they are some special exception. I know MANY babies who have STTN since 8 weeks old - I know a handful who did it even sooner. One in particular I know would sleep from 10pm...in his non-vibrating bassinet...until 10am at 2 weeks old. Honestly the mother would have to wake him at 10am to feed him. All of these babies I am speaking of were all on very strict schedules from the moment they were brought home from the hospital. They were not fed on demand as I see a lot on these boards. They were woken to feed at their scheduled time during the day.
I'm fairly new to these boards and have been afraid to post that I don't believe in feeding on demand since that seems the norm around here. Any baby I know that is fed on demand does not STTN. The babies I know that STTN at a young age are all on very strict, woken to feed schedules. Seems to work nicely for a lot of people. That's what they do in the hospital when your baby is just a few days old...you wake to feed them at the scheduled times.
I should mention I am speaking of FF babies only. I do understand BF babies need to eat more often and I don't know any that STTN at such a young age.
Again no offense to anyone here. I just don't believe babies that STTN at young ages are any special exception or that the mom is just "lucky" - moms work very hard to get their babies on a schedule to STTN. I think it's really unfair to say these moms are just lucky IMO.

.
This isn't a flame, but as a BTDT mom of a FF baby, I don't see how you can not feed on demand....if my child is hungry, I am goingto feed him
Also, I know my hospital did NOT wake my DS to eat, they fed on demand during the night and during the day he was in the room with me and I fed him when he was hungry...
ETA-Even kids who feed on demand will eventually make up their own 3-4 hour schedule as well

My hospital feeds at scheduled times...not on demand. I guess all hospitals are different.
It's very easy to not feed on demand when they are on a schedule. They don't really get hungry until their scheduled time. When they start to cry/get hungry before their scheduled time, that is when you up their ounces because they are obviously getting hungry sooner and that's a sure sign they need to eat more.
I respect everyone's decisions on how to feed their babies...like I said I am just defending the mom's of babies who STTN. They work hard to get there and seem to be called lucky or exceptions on these boards. They get no praise for their hard work on scheduling their babies and it working.
