Parents should really not be traveling with kids in the car at all until they are at least 5. Just leave them in the house all the time. That's my new recommendation. It's most definitely the safest way.

Honestly, I had no idea about this rec, until this site my DD is 2 1/2 and forward facing and has been for a while. Obviously, my 7 month old is rear facing, but I will keep him rear facing as long as possible. I just wonder why this safety issue isn't brought to the attention of more parents. Wish i would have know for DD. I would probably send some links to my friend or just casually bring up in conversation what your ped told you, etc.. She probably has no clue, like me.
WAIT!!! WHAT???? How is this possible that you didn't know? Didn't we discuss this before?!!
ETA: I am sure no one knows this... but 'maddysmommy' is my BFF- since we were 5 years old! Wow. I started the whole rear facing thread and my BFF doesn't know? W.T.F! Some friend I am!! I'm sorry Michelle!! CLICK HERE!

I wouldn't say anything. Personally I get a little offended when people bring things like that to my attention because it makes me feel like I am ignorant, or that I'm doing something wrong, or that I don't care about my child, etc. It's like when people told me "OMG you aren't breastfeeding?!?!?" Like I should be stripped of parental rights or something.
ITA!! I dont think its your business to "gently inform her" We turned DD around at 10 mo because she would scream and cry and I hated the rear seat, it was heaven when we turned it around. She is now 26 months...she is alive and well and happy. I know you are thinking your are helping but I am not a pushy parent and honestly TO EACH HIS OWN CHILD. I would leave it alone!

Re: Any ideas on how to gently inform a friend that her child is safest rear facing?
I had no idea of the new recommendation of rear facing till age 2. DD#1 was turned forward facing around 15 months...but she is going on 5 years old...so its been a while. Now DD#2 is only 4 weeks and I need a refresher course on alot of things...... Out of curiosity....arent DC's legs too long at that point to rear face?? is it just an age recommendation or is there a weight/height recommendation as well?? TIA (Sorry if this was answered in an above reply)

I agree. My DS is HUGE. I could barely keep him rear facing until 13 months. His knees were up by his chin!

In many European countries, it is policy to keep DC rear-facing until age 4 or 5. There has been no documented cases of a child breaking their legs because they were rear-facing and in a collision. Of course, European car seats are built to higher standards than in the US, and can support a 4 or 5 yo rear-facing.

Ok...standards are better in Europe...but i'm still confused. Where are DC's legs once they get past the edge of the car seat and would be hanging over if it were forward facing??

They just bend them or sit cross legged from what I understand.
Personally, I would rather my DC be a little uncomfortable than risk having serious injury to their spine and neck.
I'm like you... DS was already forward facing for a while when the new recommendation came out. DD is now 8 months and we will be keeping her rear facing until 2. With more research and knowledge, comes new recommendations on how to keep our kids as safe as possible!
