Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
DD is 2.
Since I had her I have been home and sent her to my mom or mother in law exactly 3x and they were all because I was home sick with strep/sinus infections and unable to take care of her.
Even during the summer, I have only dropped her off for an hour or two to go to the Dr or dentist....but never just to do my own thing and relax.
DH thinks I am nuts, and tells me to drop her off and get errands done, go shopping, whatever.... but I feel guilty doing that and want to spend time with her.
Just wanted to see if anyone else is nutty like me.

Me! I feel like I don't get enough time with DS during the week so I love to spend time with him when I can. But my dh is also a teacher so for the most part he's there to help or to watch him if I have a drs appt or something.

I am not a teacher BUT I really don't leave DD with anyone for "no reason" it is always for a doctor's appt. or an actual event.
I keep saying that I am going to - but the other day DH took DD to my MIL's while I was at work, and I literally sat by the window waiting for them to come home, I was so sad that I didn't get to see her when I got home from work. I mean, I finished up all I needed to do very quickly, watched some stuff on my DVR. . . but then I was just waiting for him to bring her back to me

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
I have never had a day "off" during a break, summer, even sick day. I have thought about getting a 1 time per week sitter for the summer so that I do have time to shop, go to the doctor, etc, but I feel guilty about that too. I think part of why I never have someone watch my girls when I am off of work is that my mom and MIL watch my girls, so I feel bad.

ME!
I'm an SLP, but I also work in the schools and I was just saying yesterday how I'm not going to send him to daycare next week (he goes 3 days) even though they are open 2/3 of those days. I just can't do it!
I am out of the house M/W/F 7-4 and T/R from 6:30am-8pm... so I feel like I never see him as it is!

I always have DS when I am home....although it's a pain sometimes to take him to do errands, it's just become a part of our routine and I truly cherish the time I am able to spend with him. Now, being 34 weeks preggo, if any of the grandparents offered to take him for a day next week while we're off, I wouldn's complain though

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
Me... I only ask my mom or MIL to watch them if I actually have something to do, like an appoinment or a GTG/party for one of the kids. Not that I would feel guilty, I just never thought to do it.
I did ask my sister to come over once so I could do a crapload of errands, that was around the holiday season I think. Does that count?
ETA: I'm a moron and didn't see that the topic title said teachers, sorry

Not a teacher, but I never leave DS for no reason. Since I do work, I feel like I have limited time w/ DS, so...

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
I know this isnt what you asked, but I am a SAHM and I STILL have never left either of my kids (DS is 5) with someone for no "reason"...
Its always for an appt of some sort ( doctor, dentist, etc..) Never recreation...
Unfortunately I can also count on probably two hands how many times DH and I have even been out together w/out the kids in the past 5 years...Maybe if we had a more enthusiastic grandma that looked forward to babysittying or another option we might...
So, no- I don't think you are nutty (or if you are then I am too )

I'm not a teacher either, but I have never left DS to just get things done etc. In fact, other than for work, I've never had anyone watch him except for ONE time when DH and I went to my friend's 30th bday party late at night.
DH has left DS a number of times with his mom on days that he's watched him to get errands done, doctors appointments, etc.

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
Not a teacher, but DS is 18 mos old and I have only been home ONCE without him. And that was because I was having surgery that day and was going under anesthesia. My mom watched DS that day, and DH picked DS up as soon as we were home from the doctor.
Perhaps if he was in daycare, and I was paying for it whether he was there or not, I might be inclined to do my own thing. But my mom watches him for us FT, and if I'm not at work, then I should be the one caring for him. She's already doing enough for us. Anything extra would be taking advatage of her, which I def. don't want to do.

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
We just hired a nanny who is extremely available so I have been doing that more...our kids are around the same age. I really have no one else to leave them with unles we get stuck then my IL's will do it. they kind of like to do their own thing.

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
Me! Well, I'm a music therapist, but I work in a school. I seriously want to soak up every minute I can with my boy. I can't imagine ever taking a break from him. He comes to daycare at my school M-Th, and Friday stays home with Daddy. Every Friday, I am like chomping at the bit to get out of here and I race home because I miss him like crazy! I am definitely not at a point where I could drop him off with family or a sitter just to get a break or get stuff done.
ETA: There are definitely some errands that are easier to get done if he is not with me, but I usually save those for his naptimes. My husband works out of our house, so I can put Kieran down for his nap, give the monitor to my husband, and know that I have a solid 1.5-2 hours to run errands.

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
I am a teacher and my kids go to daycare. I do send them in some of the days that I am off. For instance next week they will probably go 3 days. I schedule all my doctors appointments during vacation as well as hair cuts. I obviously can't bring my kids to those type of appointments and DH works on the weekends so I can never go then. Also sometimes I just need a day to myself. I don't feel guilty at all. My kids know I love them and I am with them all the time. A day here or there isn't going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, Jen, you are a nut!
If it makes you happy to spend time with Sadie - then do it. BUT, I think before the new baby comes, you should take ONE day just for yourself. (JMHO)

Never - I look forward to it! Even during the summer I am with DD 100% of the time unless I have to go to like a wedding or something.

Not a teacher but I have taken days off in the past and still sent DS to daycare for the day. I have no time to myself so sometimes I really just need a day to get a haircut, do laundry without interruption etc. But I always can't wait to see my little guy at the end of the day!

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
Teacher here.. and I have family that watches my DD when I am at work. When I am off, she stays home with us. (DH is a teacher too, so Im not alone..) I have left her with grandma and grandpa when I have to get something done...
That said, If DD was in daycare, I think I would send her for a few days, get some time to really clean the house, some "me" time... especially before #2 gets here!!!!!

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
I guess I'm in the major minority.
I am a teacher and DS will be spending Monday and Tuesday with my parents to give me a much-needed break. I am essentially a single parent during the week as DH travels for work - everything falls on me. I know that other people out there have it way harder than I do, trust me. Plus, my parents LOVE having him spend the time with them and he loves it just as much. They also take him for a weekend here and there.

I'm like you (except not a teacher)...my mom will take DD here and there, especially on weekends to give me a break (usually DH works part of the weekend too). DH is home monday, but most likely she's going to daycare so we can some things done that take 10x as long with DD. I think she likes to socialize and play with her classmates, and she loves spending time w/my mom so we feel ok about it

Re: Any teachers out there that never take "breaks" from their kids during breaks?
I don't know if I get the "no reason" thing. IMO, if you want to drop your child at day care because you need a few hours to veg on your couch in peace and quiet, then do it. What we do is 24/7 and there is nothing wrong with taking a break. Everyone needs to recharge once in a while.
So I guess no one will be surprised when I say I am part of the minority who sends my DD to daycare when my school is on break. I will keep her home 2 days and because I'm taking care of obligations when she's in daycare, she and I will get to do fun, special things on those days.
The way I see it, I am paying for the whole week, I paid for the days we were snowed in too but we got extra time together. My house looks like a bomb fell on it, my principal dumped a bunch of work on me and I would like to get a pedicure. Then I can enjoy the time with her and I won't feel guilty about the stuff hanging over my head.
