Any tips for getting rid of the paci (<1yr old)?

Any tips for getting rid of the paci (<1yr old)?
When and how did you get rid of the paci? Did you go cold turkey? Anyone introduce a lovey first to help with the transition or have any other tips?
DD is 9 mos and used to only use her paci to sleep but lately we've started to use it elsewhere (car seat, even sometimes at home when she's being a fusspot) and I'm afraid we're becoming overreliant on it 
ETA: Did it affect their sleep? She's an amazing sleeper and I'm afraid of messing it up!

I've heard that if you start to poke tiny holes in the nipple, they will want it less.
I don't have on hand experience with this since mine is a thumb sucker

At 1.5 DS' binky got a hole in it, so he didn't want it, then I poked holes in the last 2 and was not buying anymore. 2 days later he was done with the binky forever.

I think I will try this soon as well. And this might be a dumb question but what did you use to poke the holes?

my friend used a safety pin.
