Anyone else freaking out about finances?
Not sure what I should do- How did you or are you preparing for baby? I don't have paid leave so I am trying to figure out how to survive without working once I have the baby.
Should I put $ into savings now? We used most of our savings to pay for our house after Sandy totally demolished it. We are pretty broke unfortunately and getting our home on the market asap. Can I do any type of disability once I give birth? Thanks for any advice!

What part of finances? During pregnancy, labor, or after that?

Anyone else freaking out about finances?
I don't get FMLA, but I know from experience that the doctor I manage is going to be fine with me taking time, of course unpaid. I'll likely take the full month of December and go back to work in January after the new year. I'm saving up. We are rebuilding our savings after paying for the kitchen reno, but it looks like it's building back up pretty quickly.
I have a fair amount of student loans, which is the only reason I'm honestly going back to work after, (about $15K left). Over the last year, I've increased my payments to them exponentially, I will likely drop back down to the "minimum" payment initially after baby is born and then gradually increase again, if I can with daycare costs.

I'm nervous about daycare expenses once I go back to work. Things are going to be very tight at that point. I'm so jealous of people who have family members to watch their child.

I don't have that option either! DH is a cop and works nights so I am going to rely on him to watch the baby up until he leaves to work and do a transfer to me when I get off ( I will have to work PT). It will be interesting how we work this out lol

i'm a little freaked out but mostly because i havent sat down and drawn up a budget yet. I've thought about it and semi-planned but we didnt think it would work the first time so it's not all in stone yet. we were waiting to see how much we shelled out out to the cryobank

Go for it! If you can in the meantime, increase your payments slightly, it really makes a HUGE difference. I had them deferred a few years back when we were living upstate and I was making less than peanuts.

Re: Anyone else freaking out about finances?
Having been there and done that, I can tell you that somehow it all works out. It will always seem like There will never be enough money, time, etc (the list goes on and on). But somehow, someway you make it work. Try not to stress too much!
As far as maternity leave, I didn't get paid maternity either. I saved every week for my whole pregnancy before I went out and that helped a lot. So if you can put aside some money every week or every time you get paid that will be helpful.

I've had them increased since I graduated and then when Sandy hit, we were crushed with bills. I'm now paying my exact amount which is a lot along with every bill in the house, except the mortgage. I really am worried that DH won't be able to take my load in bills. Someone suggested I start buying diapers and wipes now to lessen the load but with a house going on the market, we won't have room to store them. I guess I will try and put $ away from every paycheck. It's all a lot of pressure on a pregnant girl!

I know, I somehow did fine with my DS but my new husband came along with some financial burden unfortunately. He can not save at all so it will all be on me to put $ aside. Men suck lol

I would try to save up as much as possible. If you can, try to live off one paycheck and bank the other, especially if soon your income will cut since you'll be working PT instead of FT.
There are also options like cutting cable, clipping coupons, reducing going out to eat, etc.

The good news is you have time! You have about 7 months, right? That's really a good long while. Deferment is not a bad option, they are REALLY flexible about it!

This is basically what we did starting when DH got his new job last August. I just pay my student loans & utilities (minimal for our household). I think this is probably the biggest reason why we're NOT freaked out about it.

Yes, I am trying to breathe today knowing that I have time plus a very good support system from family. I spent the whole morning spackling and packing stuff into crates. I know I'll get it all together.

But as the other girls suggested cutting bills really helps too. I've been cutting things out here and there to save some money. And also trying to live on one paycheck is great advice!

This is what we did, knowing I planned to stay out of work for at least a year. I paid a few things (my car which was almost paid off and my student loans mostly) and the rest of my check went into a savings account. We are not big spenders thankfully but we did cut out things like cable and don't have smartphones or data plans to keep those expenses down.

Re: Anyone else freaking out about finances?
Thank you everyone for the advice! I just budgeted and I think I can work this out before the baby comes. How are you guys cutting back with the cable?? I have the lowest plan with no HBO or extras, landline and basic internet and we are paying $190 a month. (Verizon) We can't cut it down anymore except to get rid of DVR but I need that having a DC lol our cell package is around $160 which is for 2 phones and data adequate for minimal use. Everything is just so damn expensive these days! We are not big spenders at all. I don't know how people do it these days with all the bells and whistles!

We're about to get rid of two boxes in our home because we bought Roku's and have Netflix and Amazon Prime - definately look into this as an option. I love our Roku.

It's basically a small box you purchase, pay one time, I think it's maybe $70 or so? and you can then connect to your TV and stream Netflix and other things like Hulu, Amazon, etc. Because we have Amazon Prime, we get their streaming service included as well so more shows, movies, etc. Def look into it.
