anyone else have 2nd thoughts about not getting amnio

My 1st NT scan they said the chance of downs was elevated 1/100 (I heard normal is like 1/350??!?)

The part 2 - it came out to 1/200...

So since the risk was less and the risk of a misscarriage due to the amnio was greater than the actual poss of having a downs..my DH & I decided to not get it...

But now it is eating me up inside and I think about it every day...

I am wondering if I should have gotten it...now , even though my risk is pretty low, I am still going to worry until the day this baby is born...instead I could have known the results a month ago! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had an amnio and never 2nd guessed my decision once I made it. Let m e know if you have question about the proceedure.

THe risk of miscarriage is acutally pretty low and much of that depends on the Dr performing it and how often they do them.

I never had the NT done because of my age I knew my results wwould not be great so I went straight to the amnio at 17 weeks and so happy I did.

I did not have one with my 1st pregnancy and won't again. I wouldn't do anytihng even if I found out there was something wrong so to me it's not worth the risk...I would still carry my baby to term no matter the results from an amnio.

I think its normal to second guess yourself and I dont know how late you can do an amino. If it's too late, just try to remind yourself of the reason you made your original decision in the first place- you said the risk of miscarriage was greater than the risk the NT scan was showing and you didn't want to take that chance.
Being pregnant it seems like there is always something to find to worry about.
I had an NT scan today and will not have an amnio for the miscarriage reason. Even thought the m/c risk is low, I would never terminate the preganancy so I don't think it is a chance worth taking. It is 100% a personal choice.

I was told it is normally done between 16- 20 weeks but You might still be able to do it.

I had it done just so I would know. It wasn't goign to change anything about the pregnancy,....I wouldn't terminate it but I just had to know.

Each person is different and has different reasons for getting it or not but if you have questions of the actual proceedure I would be happy to answer based on my experience and I know a few of us on here have done it and they were great in sharing their experience which helped me along the way.

I didn't have an amnio and have not regretted our decision. I had good results with the NT scan and blood work (for my age of 43 it was 1/900 for Downs). I did have a concern when we discovered the our baby has an enlarged kidney but I have been having regular sonos and it seems to be under control and all the other measurements are perfect.

Do you know what factor made you high risk? The blood work or the scan? Is there any other reason why you might think that there is cause for concern?

I'm sure you could have it done. But it would be informational only. I believe the cut off for termination is 24wks, if that were to be your desicion. But talk to your dr and tell them that you want to prepare yourself just incase.

Re: anyone else have 2nd thoughts about not getting amnio

I said I would only do amnio if something with the quad screen or NT scan came back abnormal. Well, they did. And very high at that. My doc did not want to wait to do the amnio at 17 weeks, so at 12 weeks, he sent me for CVS testing.

All that scare, and my CVS testing came back completely normal. It's completely normal to second guess yourself. And I would think that everything is probably perfect anyway, and not to put yourself in a situation you don't have to.

And I would have thought you were too late for amnio anyway, but what do I know?

Re: anyone else have 2nd thoughts about not getting amnio

I had abnormal results (normal NT but abnormal AFP?)

I choose not to do the amnio. As much as I'd like to have a guarantee, the baby sono continues to appear to be developing as he should. They can tell a lot by a sonogram now, but not everything of course.

I didn't want it because I worried about the risk, small, but a risk.
And the results would not have changed any decision to keep the baby.
And you don't know the severity of the disability. I know lots of people with downs syndrome working, married, happy etc.

Re: anyone else have 2nd thoughts about not getting amnio

I was told to have an amnio since my 12 and 16 week blood work both came back high for downs. My DH and I needed to know if there was anything wrong. I spoke to a lot of wonderful women on this site who really helped me realize I mad the right decision. Here is the catch, my amnio was normal however at my 20 week scan they found a hole in the stomach of my baby. There is a name for it and it seems like it is a hernia or something. Ill know more on Tuesday. I was told that is why my blood work kept coming up abnormal. How does your scans look? I also saw my cousin who did a 3d scan and told me that my baby looked fine.
Good Luck!

Re: anyone else have 2nd thoughts about not getting amnio

I'm having mine Wed. I go back and forth but the risk of adverse events is so low....I had an ivf pregnancy so I'm like ugh....but I could not go through the rest of my pregnancy wondering so that is why I keep going back to doing it.....my risk is 1/187 and I'm 33. I work in the field of medicine so I already know too much about all this.....I need a yes or no diagnosis......I really think it goes beyond keeping it or not......there can be major health issues to deal with and the costs associated can be very high....so, I need to ease my mind or at least get the answer sooner so i can relax.....not easy at all

Re: anyone else have 2nd thoughts about not getting amnio

I had one at 17w due to my age and elevated chance of Downs. I knew that I needed to know for sure one way or the other if there were potentially any issues
after researching it, the risk of m/c was super low so we felt it was worth it for us

ask your dr if you're really still concerned and see what he/she has to say. Good luck! Chat Icon
