Anyone else have a hard time looking at pics of crying kids on Santa's lap?
It breaks my heart to look at all the pictures of kids screaming and crying on Santa's lap! There's always such desperation in their faces, like they are really terrified- and who could blame them?? This is definitely something new to me since having a baby. I've always found them to be pretty funny. But I've noticed, this year I just can't take them. I just literally want to hug every kid that I see in a pic like this! I'm not saying you are a bad parent if you have pics like this at all, so please don't be offended! I just personally can't look at them because it breaks my heart
Edited for clarification: I don't think there are long term traumatic effects on children who cry on Santa's lap! I just feel so bad for them in the moment.

Oh I think they are classic. Mere seconds of emotion and chance for mommy or daddy to come to the rescue and be hero-fied yet again!
I don't mind them. I enjoy them. I love looking at my mom's photo album of all of our Santa pics to see who was crying that year.

No because I look at it this way... my mother has one of these of me for each of my 1st 5 or so years and I turned out pretty normal with no strange, irrational Santa-phobias so I know these kids are OK the minute they get off Santa's lap

Nope. Doesn't bug me one bit. I had a great one 2 years ago with both girls screaming... this year they both sat happily on his lap with no tears and big grins. Since I know it didn't ruin them for life I can look at those photos and smile

It doesn't bother me per se but I won't make my kids do it. Miranda missed out for 2 or 3 years I think. Two years we tried and what a waste! We didn't even bother with the Easter bunny. She wanted to go this year and did great. Hudson was a little apprehensive but did it without a fuss or crying.

Kids who cry one minute can be so happy the next. I don't think that many of the kids who get scared for a minute or two end up having nightmares or any lasting trauma.

I definitely don't think so either. It just makes me so sad in that moment.

Nah. Liam cried at Santa but, he still loves to go to the gate at the mall and point at santa and say, "santa" over and over.. so I think he'll be fine and it does make for a funny picture that every parent since cameras were invented has. It only lasts for about a minute anyway.

Re: Anyone else have a hard time looking at pics of crying kids on Santa's lap?
Before this year I always found them hysterical. Then yesterday I told them we were going to the mall to see Santa and Gracie was telling me what she was going to ask Santa for. We waited on line and she was fine (Jack was oblivious), then even as we were the next people to go, she was looking at Santa and Jack was waving.
Then it was like a switch when it was their turn to sit on his lap.
Honestly, the second they got off his lap, both kids were fine and Jack actually waved bye.
I really don't think it's going to affect them long term in any way.

Re: Anyone else have a hard time looking at pics of crying kids on Santa's lap?
I would never put my DD on a strange old man's lap. I find it odd. However, if someone else is ok with it and their child takes a picture that shows how terrified the child is, I can't say I don't find it amusing.

I totally understand what you are saying, I don't think the kids suffer any long term trauma from it - over even that they are still upset 5 minutes after, but the pics make me a little sad too. I feel sad that they were freaked out in that moment, I am sap.

Re: Anyone else have a hard time looking at pics of crying kids on Santa's lap?
Nope. I think they are hilarious and going to make great conversations for when the kids are older. My 4mo old twins had their picture with Santa and DD was screaming (DS was just chillin with him!). Sure, I always hate to hear her cry, but she cries over all kinds of things...loud noises, new people, the dog barking, etc. It's just part of her experiencing the world.

Re: Anyone else have a hard time looking at pics of crying kids on Santa's lap?
I feel a little bad for them also. It's just this year that it really bothers me...I'm not sure why. Might be because Lily is 3 now, and more aware, and I know she remembers things....so I know if I brought her to see Santa and she freaked, it would be something that would stick with her.
Not that I judge anyone for bringing their child, or laughing at the pictures. I just know, for my daughter, it wouldn't be as simple as a picture that would be forgotten. She would remind me about it for months! And it would break my heart every time!!

No not at all. There a lots of things that scare kids, sometimes Santa is one of them. I think its hysterical, like the pic on Cindys kids - HYSTERICAL!

You never know what is going to happen until you actually get them in Santa's lap...I though DS was going to freak the second he sat down and he didn't. I was all ready for one of "those" pictures!!!

Re: Anyone else have a hard time looking at pics of crying kids on Santa's lap?
now that I have ds I was feeling a little bad this year. He doesn't like strangers and had already started crying while we were waiting on line. When we got up to Santa ds got even more upset as we got near Santa. I figured dh would hold him and sit next to Santa... Santa actually had us have a family photo with him in back of us. It was really nice.

My son freaks out the same way when he sees my brother, so I don't feel bad.
