Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
I went to Disney at age 16 for the first time & since then been there 3 other times. I like it but honeetly we like universal studios much better.
Dh & I said we will take the boys but probably not until age 5 when they can truly remember it. We will not to back yearly.

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
My parents never took us to Disney and I think I turned out ok! That said, I really dont plan to take DCs until they are around 7 or 8. first of all, the cost!!! I had no idea until my neighbor was telling me about their trip and how much everything was..I could not believe! That said, I am not totally against it. I went in my 20s adn really liked it so I am sure I will want to take them eventually but definitely in no rush.

No desire to take the kids any time soon.
What puts me off Disney is the amount of PLANNING that seems to be needed. Recently I toyed with the idea of going. Looked at the travel board and saw post after post devoted to Disney-related strategies. Strategies for booking what restaurants you're going to eat at (6 months in advance! WTF!), and it only got more complicated regarding those character meals. Strategies for picking a hotel (will you use a rental car? bus? monorail? hovercraft?) and then finding obscure codes to get discounts. Strategies for attacking each park, starting at "rope drop" (I still have no idea what that is). It all seemed so overwhelming. Bin Laden's assassination was probably planned with less precision than some of these Disney trips.
So I said screw it. We're spending a week by a lake instead
if this is all that is keeping you from going - I would say pick a less busy time to go and book through a TA who is a disney expert - this way THEY do ALL the work for you. Some people really enjoy planning - I love to plan vacations in general - be it Europe, a cruise or disney - it is just fun for me to do the research - BUT it totally isn't for everyone. I know plenty of people who go and wing it and have a great time too. But if you don't like to plan go to a TA (important that they are a disney expert) - THEY will figure out what hotel is best for you, they will book your dining for you, and they will even help you plan what parks to go to etc. Then you just show up, relax and have fun.
But again - like cruises or anything else it ISN"T for everyone.

This is actually a great idea. Would you believe I never thought of using a travel agent? We probably won't go till at least next year, but it does seem like a far more appealing idea if I could outsource all of the endless planning and strategizing... that's just not fun for me the way it is for others.
I understand what you mean about it not being for everyone. DH and I love camping-- definitely not everyone's taste, but those who love it, really LOVE it I doubt I'll ever be a "Disney person", but I'd like to take the kids one time just to show it to them.

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
I have no desire to go to Disney. I have never been, and don't feel like I missed anything. If I am going to spend that amount of money on a vacation, I want the kids to experience a different culture.
To me, Disney World is just consumerism gone wild.... like conspicuous consumption. It makes me really uncomfortable.

I've been there as a kid and I'm like eh about it. We will take DD when she is old enough to "get" it and really enjoy it.
But I really don't have much desire to go.
I'm sure we'll have a good time but it's not my ideal vacation and I'm not dying to go.
I could really take or leave Disney.

I totally understand - I could never camp (I need a warm shower, nice bed, etc) - the same as I love to go to Europe and go to the museums and churches because I was an art history major - but my DH would rather shoot himself than spend more than a little time doing that. I think with any vacation it is important to pick something that goes with your personality. I like disney because it is fun, I love the look on my girls faces and while yes it is work - we actually did a cruise to bermuda and I don't think that was any less work or stress - it was just different.
I think people are so used to planning their own trips these days that they forget how helpful a TA who really knows there stuff can be. If you find someone really good they will watch for discounts for you, ask you about food likes etc and then book the restaurants you want for you, and help you come up with touring plans. Honestly the only REAL planning you must do is if you want popular restaurants to book those or a lot of sit downs booking those because they fill up - but how is that different than trying to go to the most popular restaurants in NYC or other major city where many of them are full with reservations 30 days in advance. Then you just figure out what park for that day. As far as touring plans go - you DON"T need them - but they ARE helpful only because if you pick a busy time of the year they maximize what you can see or do - but if you don't mind going with the flow and don't mind missing some things or waiting a long time you don't need them. I don't go during a busy time so I don't use them - but I do plan our dining only because for my sanity I enjoy having a sit down meal and not being on the go with counter service all day - but that isn't for everyone.
Besides disney is already ridiculously crowded - just think if everyone loved it equally it would be impossible to book a hotel or get into the park - so it is good that it isn't for everyone

Reading this post has overwhelmed me. I never realized there so much went into planning a trip to Disney.
I do want to go when my kid(s) are old enough but Im not dying to get there either. Id much rather go to Beaches T&C or something tropical. I feel like that would be a happy medium for the whole family. I dont see my DH getting overly excited about Disney at all, in fact, Im sure it would take some begging to get him there.

I have gone many many times. I have 3 young daughters. MrDrMatt and mys elf have absolutely NO DESIRE to take them. We would rather go to Europe instead.
However, I know that we WILL eventually take them. I hope its not for a very long long long long time.

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
I am not..at all, but my husband is the biggest Disney fanatic ever! I don't want to go, but I will, for the kids and him. We are supposed to go in August, he wants to go for 15 days! I think that is way too long, and of course it's his way or we don't go at all...I think that is making it even worse! I've never been to Disney either, but then again I've never even been on a plane!!

That is awesome! Last time we were there we stayed for 10 days..........I could've easily stayed longer. There is SOOOOO much to see and do!! However, August is WAAAAY to hot for me! I lived in FL for a few years, the summers are NOT for me!
You will have so much fun, especially with a Disney fanatic in your group!! And wait until you see the looks on your kids faces.......priceless! My mom STILL talks about the look on our faces the first time they took us and I am 36!!

Have you ever been? If not, that may be why you don't want to take your kids there.
I have, many years ago when I was in my early 20s. Long story. I just feel like it has been turned into some cult in the past years, like you MUST go there...
We took dc's last year (10 nights) and they LOVED it! Dh and I feel this urgency to take them every year because they are small for such a short amount of time. In other words the age where they are not into magic kingdom is going to come quicker than we can imagine.
Once they are not into it we have a list of other places we would like to travel

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
I am more interested in going back to Beaches again but I know that we will go to Disney. I have a back injury and I think that Disney will be a bit too tiring until I get better. At an all inclusive it is easier to pace yourself even though it's not super easy b/c there is so much to do. I never thought I would want the same big vacation twice or that I would want to spend so much money in one place that is not Disney but this is what the circumstances are.

Even now as an adult when I go, I walk into the Magic Kingdom and I still feel that same magic. I swear, it makes me feel like a kid again. And I can't help but to be happy!! I just adore Disney and I can't wait to give my DD those same amazing memories that I have.
This is how I feel too!

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
I went to Disney once. When Epcot was just being finished. We drove with my 4 year old brother. In August. The only "water ride" was the log flume. It broke on the way up the first plunge. We had to walk down. I have memories of Disney but none "magical." The closest would be when my brother was on Its a Small World and said, "I want this...ALL of this."
Maybe if my parents were disney people I would have the bug. But I dont. DH lived in Florida once and holds a grudge against the whole state so he is not a fan of going either. I do plan on taking DS when he is older. In my mind five is a good age, but I will never be one of those every year people. I would rather use that money and take DS to see Europe. Or take a cruise. Or go to the Disney store, buy a pair of Mickey ears and sit in swimming pool for free

Me three. We are going in the next few mths, and it will be most of what I think about day and night until then. I can't wait to see my DDs face light up and enjoy all the things WDW has to offer.
Heck, my 3 year old still talks about our trip to Hershey Park (Hershey Lodge). It was a great experience, just pure fun.

I think its fine to not go. My parents never took us growing up. We took summer beach vacations and I loved it.
I think whatever works for you and your family. The kids will be fine without a trip to disney

im sure i will HAVE to take them at some point but im not looking forward to it..all of that stuff is not for me.
and you know what- its just as expensive as a vacation to europe or the caribbean.
id much rather do that.
but i do know they would love it, so i dont want to deprive them.
maybe i can get the grand parents to take them....

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
OMG so glad you started this thread as I JUST asked a friend the other day "Am I a terrible mother if I never take my kids to Disney?
I went twice as a child and once as an adult and have zero desire to go back. We went to Legoland in CA for one day last summer and I had had my fill by 2pm. I will say my kids loved every minute so that's the only reason I'm even considering it.
Wondering if Disneyland in CA would involve less planning and strategizing than Florida. Like others have said, I'd rather take them to Hawaii, Europe or Costa Rica for the same cost!

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
i have been to disney so many times...so overrated.
dh hates it with a passion. cannot see waiting in lines for rides that aren't even fun.
we took josh at 18 mos. i loved taking him. it was when he was so into buzz. dh hated it. said he will never go again. cool with me, then i don't have to pay to get him in and feed him. going with my moms group next year. no husbands.

Re: Anyone else just NOT interested in going to Disney?
Sorry, not me!
I actually cant wait to take DS and DC2 when theyre old enough. We went as kids and i have such great memories of it! I want my kids to have those same great memories. DS is only 2 but when he sees mickey on tv he gets so excited. I cant wait to see his face when he sees the whole shebang!
As I see it, you gotta take your kids 2x in their lives. Once when theyre younger and wanna do Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, etc. And then when theyre older again like early teens to go see Epcot, Universal Studios, etc. This way its nice and evenly spaced out years wise and doesnt feel like overkill. I'd like to take DS next year for his 4th bday in the fall when all the kids are in school. At 4 years old, I wont feel guilty if he misses a week of prek. This way it wont be as crowded.

I'm with you! More so, my DH is with you! He is very anti-Disney and did it once when my DS was 1 years old, and will probably not want to do it again. NOw that we will have 3 kids who are older and would enjoy it more, I'm still not so sure he'd be in for the experience again!
