I am first generation American; my parents are from Italy. I stick out in my own family because they are dark haired olive skinned and I am the opposite. Not all Italians are dark.

Husbands family is distantly Russian. He tries to pull the "I'm like 1/8 Italian." Then you're not Italian in my book Chat Icon

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

I'm this pale Eastern European Jew, and my DH is adopted and is a mix of everything - his family (who adopted him) are all Italian - and supposedly he does have some Italian and Greek, but people think he is anywhere from Native American because of his long dark hair, to Hispanic...

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

I have one grandparent from Russia, one from Romania, one from Poland(could have been Austria as that is what his last passport said) and one was born here. Back then, the borders between the countries were much different and had they lived in those locations today, my heritage may be a bit different.

DH's family is of Russian and German descent.

Both sets of our parents were born and raised NYers. His family has been here a lot longer than mine.

DH and I are identifiably Jewish Americans and I do not have any ties to the countries from which our grandparents/families came. They left those cultures behind, assimilated and chose a culture based in religion, not nationality.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

For 2 such similar ethnicities - I am Danish/Irish and he is German/Irish - we are very dissimilar!

He is slim and black haired and blue eyed, while I am more 'robust' with blond with green eyes. He was raised in a very stoic, quiet household where people are not terribly affectionate or open. He was taught that family is family and everyone else is an outsider. I am from a family of loud mouths - always open about feelings and opinions. I was taught that there is family by blood - and there is family by choice and all are equally valued. My parents considered their dearest friends and their children to be our family also. My 'other dad' was Burmese and I have aunts and uncles who are Native American, Italian and Jewish.

Rob was a very different man before falling under our influence!Chat Icon

we are completely different and it always comes up.

his family is 100% irish--like some were born there. they can all get sunburned in the middle of the winter and are all pale with blue eyes!

my mom's family is italian and my dad's family is german (blond/blue eyed). i'm olive complexion with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. my family is your typical LOUD italian family (don't see the german side much) and DH still can't get used to everyone yelling over each other at the table. we get together often, which is the complete opposite of DH's family.

it's always interesting when our families are together

We are kind of opposite of you, lol.

DH 100% Italian. I am Irish.

BUT both families are loud, talk over one another so it doesn't feel all that diff to us.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

Well, kinda but not really Chat Icon

I mean, we share the same religion, which, in our case, is essentially the same culture and nationality (Jewish), but we grew up worlds apart.

I grew up in Great Neck, and DH grew up outside of Tel Aviv in Israel.

I am 50% French Canadian and 50% Irish and Hungarian (with a little Native American in there somewhere)

DH is Irish, German and French Canadian.

No Italian anywhere here, although people automatically assume I am either spanish or italian because I have dark features (but pale skin). Once they hear my last name (maiden name) they realize with that many vowels and ending in an "X" in must be french. LOL
