Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

Both my parents were born and raised in Italy - I am first generation Italian. When I learned to speak - I learned in Italian. I learned English when I went to school and my mother learned with me.

My DH is a mix of French, English and Irish. His parents and both sets of grandparents (with the exception of his father mother) were all born here. His father's mother was born in Ireland.

DH loves that I speak another language and is very adamant that our children learn a 2nd language as well. I think its nice to know a 2nd language and I'm excited that DH wants that for our children.

I wish I knew a 2nd language. DH is fluent in Spanish and I always tell him that our kids will learn English and Spanish when they are young. Trying to learn Spanish now is SO hard!

my dh is from central america.

my family by blood is a wondrous cocktail of all the best Europe has to offer Chat Icon and then we have the Puerto Rican side. Chat Icon Chat Icon

my family is loud and rambuncious.

dh's is fairly quiet and reserved (especially as compared to mine)

I once thought it best to keep them away from each other...but now I realize how much fun interesting and different we all are too each other....and that is the spice of life!

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

I'm Italian, Irish and German, raised in a very Italian household (but Italian American, not Italian off the boat, if that makes sense).

He's Jewish - Polish and Russian.

We joke that we don't have one gene in common.

Far beyond genetics though, our families are sooooo different.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

DH's family has been living in New York for centuries, since the first Europeans started coming over by boat in the 1600s. So he's mostly Dutch and English with a little Native American and African mixed in.

Meanwhile I'm only first generation American on my mom's side, 3rd on my dad's... I'm half German, a quarter Polish, and Irish and French.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

Nope, DH & I actually have the exact same heritage. We are both 75% Italian and 25% English. The only difference is that I was closer with my English grandmother than my Italian side, and he is closer with his Italian relatives.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

Well technically we have italian in us but we have such different backgrounds.

My parents were born in Catania, Italy and came here when they were married. As a PP mentioned I am Italian American BUT I had an Italian upbringing NOT an Italian American upbringing.

DH is Italian, Irish and German BUT he had a 100% American upbringing.

My family is very quiet, conservative and religious. His family is loud, laid back and easy going. They get along okay though - there is a bit of a language barrier.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

DH is British
I am from El Salvador

We are a total clash but its fun. He speaks Spanish sometimes so its cute and he is trying to teach my dd. So you have a little spanish girl saying "Hot" as "HAUGHT"

Our families get along fantastic but it is nothing but dicephering heavy accents between them. Its comical.

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

I'm a total mutt...Irish (my mom's dad was born there and came to America when he was 18), German, French and Swedish.

DH? HE doesn't even know! He has SOME clue.....Welsh, German....his Dad filled me in with more when we visisted over xmas. They have a little Cherokee in them too. There's something else in there but I'm not sure...how sad that DH doesn't care to know! But I guess he's one of those "I'm American" peeps.

Though he keeps saying he's Italian...yeah, he can keep dreaming.Chat Icon

Re: Anyone else's nationality TOTALLY different than DH/DW?

No, not really.... I am first-generation American with Irish parents. Everyone in my family is from Ireland, although I raised here as an American.

My DH is second-generation Irish on his mother's side, so we have that connection. In fact, his grandfather and my Dad are from the same tiny town in Ireland...

BUT, he is first generation Italian on is father's side. His father is from Italy. It's sooo not a big deal, but we all tease him. He is sooo Italian when it comes to his food... my family never used olive oil or parmesan cheese, etc. so we joke around that he's the FOREIGNER.... Chat Icon but in terms of other things, he is very "Irish" if that makese sense as he was raised there during his a large part of his childhood. so, really all i have on him is the food--- does EVERYTHGIN have to be covered in garlic and oil... and must you eat dried up salami at every possible opportunity!???
