Anyone familiar with insurance or med billing? Have a question.
So in a previous post I had mentioned that I received an explanation of benefits from my insurance company which showed a denial of payment for bloodwork that I had gotten done at an REs office who I went to as a 2nd opinion. I thought it was because I saw another RE a few days prior who also ran bloodwork. I called the insurance company today, and they showed that the REs office duplicated the bloodwork- one done in house and then shipped it out to Quest lab to be run. Do you think I would still be responsible for payment if I am billed either by the REs office directly, or Quest? just starting to freak out that I may be on the hook for hundreds of dollars worth of bloodwork. Thanks!

I would absolutely NOT pay for anything that was a mistake on the provider's part. Very often I tell patients to glance at EOB's but otherwise throw them out. More often then you'd realize there are billing errors or changes in billing procedure that causes denials from the insurance carrier. AND of course, the patient receives a copy of the EOB that the provider also receives and gets understandably nervous that they are going to be responsible for tons of money - I remember 10 years ago when I had my gallbladder surgery I got an EOB for a claim submitted incorrectly for the anesthesia which was something like $2K. I called up freaked out and was like, umm I'm 20, I can't pay that! But it was an error and was cleared up by the provider. My usual shpeal is to ignore eob's for the most part. But give a call to the doctor's office if you have concerns, but just know they might just say not to worry about it, that they are working on it.

Very rarely do I ever see an instance where the patient receiving the EOB actually aided in anything - after 10+ years in the business, only ONE instance comes to mind and that was at a hospital wound clinic where the patient called and said this wasn't me - the hospital billed under the wrong patient - and this was YEARS ago with such an antiquated computer system it's no wonder the mistake happened.
