Anyone familiar with keratosis pilaris?

The ped says he thinks that my DD#2 has this - she has had these bumps on her thighs and back of her upper arms for about 1.5 months now - they don't itch at all. He says to just leave them alone. They don't seem to bother her - but I think they bother me more - she is 13 months. Does anyone else have this or have children with this - what did you do for it?

TIA!

My son has it. You need a cream with ceramides-we use ceravae and I buy it at CVS. Also use a washcloth when you bathe her and sort of try to exfoliate it a bit. Put on the lotion when she is still wet. HTH

THANK YOU!!! I will definitely try that!! Is CVS the only place that sells that lotion? Is it with the regular lotions in the store?

Re: Anyone familiar with keratosis pilaris?

I have it and passed it on to my DS who in addition to his arms had it on his face from a couple mos of age til around 3 yrs old. I HATED it and tried every cream out there. Absolutely NOTHING worked, but he did finally out grow it on his face and what is on his arms and legs isn't really noticable. When I was a kid I was told to scrub it daily with a pad that was almost like brillo...that didn't work either, all it did was make my skin raw. I have been told many times nothing works. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, just sharing my experience.

thats just where I buy it but I think I've seen it at Walmart too(I live OOS though) It is with the regular lotions. You can also check their website for a coupon and stores.

Re: Anyone familiar with keratosis pilaris?

DS has this. It started when he was about 10 months and is starting to go away now (he is 2.5 years old). My friend's son had it and it went away by the time he was 3.

He had it on his cheeks, upper thighs and upper arms and shoulders. I exfoliated during baths with a bath mit, very gently and used Aveeno wash only. Also Eucerin and KP Duty lotions. They sell different ones on Amazon and at CVS. You can experiment with different ones until you find one that works.

It did not itch or cause any scarring-but I hated looking at it and dumb MIL made remarks.Chat Icon

She has a little on her cheeks but it comes and goes - only the arms and legs stay all the time

I have it on my upper arms. Had it forever. It bothers me less when I have a tan.

exfoliating works great on it....rub it hard with the washcloth when you bathe her

Re: Anyone familiar with keratosis pilaris?

i have it pretty bad Chat Icon im hoping DS doesnt get it - I remember being so self-conscious about it!

if DC does get it, when does it typically appear?

(what works for me - keep skin HYDRATED, lotion 2x a day! Also, exfoliate! Sun helps and at one point, I thought shaving my arms did but it actually made it worse in the long run - once the hair would grow back it was worse Chat Icon)

I don't know - DD#1 doesn't have it but DD#2 is 13.5 months and got it back around memorial day. I thought it was more rare from what I read online until adolescences so who knows.

Re: Anyone familiar with keratosis pilaris?

DS and I both have it (I didnt even know I had it!!) I talked to the ped and took him to a ped dermatoligist.

I have a prescription lotion. but honestly DS's is affected by the season. In the summer with sweat and stuff its worse, in the winter its not so noticeable!

Also I try to lotion him up really regularly and that helps as well.

The ped derm said there isnt too much you can do

Re: Anyone familiar with keratosis pilaris?

I have had it my whole life and it sucks! Chat Icon The only thing that makes it look better is a tan. I have tried every product out there and everything is just a temporary fix -- it always comes back. What it is an overproduction of keratin which forms hard bumps int eh hair follicles. It is not uncomfortable, just unsightly. Some people do grow out of it, but I didn't, although I used to have it on my cheeks a bit as a kid, and now I don't.
