Anyone following ketognic diet?
Planning to start in January. Lately I have been eating out a lot indulging in good food and I know it won’t stop between the holidays parties and New Years. I feel like I am all over the places on Facebook and blogs trying to learn the process. What resources have you found useful in the beginning?

You figure out your caloric needs. 70-75% need to come from fats. Then, proteins. (about 20-25%)And lastly carbss. Carbs for feamles should be 25 grams or less per day.
So for example, if you eat 1500 calories a day 1, 050 calories should be from fat which is 117 grams
350 calories from protein which is 88 grams
And 100 calories from carbs which is 25 grams
I follow the keto diet very strictly when I compete in bodybuilding it works very well. The first week can be quite difficult. Then its eaasy.

Re: Anyone following ketognic diet?
My DH is currently doing it and he LOVES it. He is dropping so much weight and is never ever hungry, never craves sugar anymore, and says he has more energy and feels better than he has in years. He watches a lot of you tube videos and gets tons of recipes online

What do you use to track your macros? I know about myfitnesspal. I read that it’s important to maintain proper potassium, magnesium, and sodium levels. Do you find it hard to meet the required amounts from food? Thanks.

I have been watching you tube videos too. If he is the only one who is following keto at home, did he find it hard to stick to it in the beginning when you are eating regular food? My problem is DH can not cook and doesn’t have time to cook so I cook for him and I feel like it’s going to be annoying to make two different types of food and be tempted by the carbs I cook for him.

Yes those are all important. I don't only count calories I ensure I eat a certain amount amount of fat, protein, and less than 20 g of carbs per da.
MCT oil helps tremendously. And a little pink salt on foods for the potassium and magnesium.

He makes dinner and I eat what he eats. It's delicious the stuff he makes. The only difference is, he will make me a side of rice or pasta and he'll either either those zero carb noodle type things (forgot what they are called) or just veges. Or he;ll make taco meat and eat it over a salad with all his good fats mixed in while I put it in taco shells, etc
The recipes he makes are great and I never feel like I can't eat them.
He has the willpower of a god, and he was really really focused on doing it so he never really was tempted by my junk food. And he says once you get past the first week or so and you break your sugar addiction, you don't even want the sugar or carbs anymore. It's very much an addiction. So now, he doesn't even feel like he's missing anything.
My only issue is I have no gallbladder so sometimes the amount of fat he eats bothers my stomach, but for one meal a day, it's fine.
He eats lunch on his own....
He also supplements with some vitamins and supplements for nutrients he feels he might be lacking.

Re: Anyone following ketognic diet?
I started a few weeks ago and I’ve lost 12 lbs which is amazing! I use an app to track my carbs/protein/fat.
I’m struggling with finding an easy dessert every once in awhile, but otherwise I haven’t found the diet too hard and I feel so much better!

Losing 12 pounds in few weeks is amazing. What app are you using? Is it MyFitnessPal? I have seen people make keto mug cakes with almond flour in the microwave. There are lots of recipes available online.

It’s called keto diet, but works similar to my fitness pal. I just use the free one and type everything in, but it lists my carbs, fats, calories, protein a lot easier! It also told me based on weight/height how much for each one.
Good idea with the mug cakes! I’ve tried a couple fat bombs from Pinterest that were good too, but my birthday is coming up and figured I couldn’t eat cake lol.

I'm not doing keto, but I just started losing weight by counting calories. Reddit has been a huge wealth of information and source of motivation, and I know they have a large keto community. You may want to check it out.

Re: Anyone following ketognic diet?
I don't follow this diet, I know someone who does and I have a question. Are all fats allowed on this plan, or are there some fats that are "bad" for you ?
For example, as a keto snack, she was eating guacamole with pork rinds. I don't understand how pork rinds can be "good" on this plan.
Not looking to start controversy, just looking for knowledge.

It's a legit question and one I had for my DH when he started it. And everyone who hears about his diet asks the same thing. Because he has lost 65 lbs so far eating more than 50% of his calories from fat. It's insane. And flies in the face of common sense dieting that we have been taught for ages right? From what he has told me- and shown me from his research- is that cholesterol is only bad in the presence of inflammation. And inflammation is largely caused by sugar and carbs. The spiking of insulin caused by eating sugar and carbs that is. Having said that, he does eat mainly the "healthy" fats... MCT oil, Avocados, etc. There is a ton of information about it online, but a lot of it is above my head in terms of medical jargon and science speak.

Re: Anyone following ketognic diet?
Thank you. It's mind boggling that a person can eat a high fat diet, and it still be "good". DH and I follow WW. I found that I do not crave carbs and sweets as much anymore. We don't use artificial sweeteners, don't eat the "diet" versions of foods, we just eat clean(er) than before. Lots of fruit and fresh veggies, more lean protein including fish. Not to say that we don't have the occasional glass of wine or Miller Lite. DH needs a structured plan that has accountability. that's where using the app, going to weekly meetings to connect with others plays an important part in his progress.

I know. When I first saw what he was eating I was floored. Butter in the coffee. And heavy cream!!
But then I saw the weight he was dropping. And how his blood sugar levels dropped significantly as did his blood pressure. He is also finding it easier to stick to than any "diet" he ever went on. Because he is never hungry. The fat is very satiating. You don't feel deprived.
It really does go against the logic of "healthy" eating we have be ingrained with for years. They are also using it for people with early Alzheimer's. They say there is promise there with this diet and memory loss. Who knows. But yes, when you stop eating sugar so much you stop craving it. It is actually an addiction. Your body starts to need and crave the sugar- once you break that addiction, you don't want it anymore. The problem is, breaking it is SOOO hard. I couldn't do it.

I’d say you can eat the bad fats on this diet and still lose weight bc of the ketone process.. and overall if someone is overweight and losing a lot of weight from diet and exercise then it’s still healthier than being overweight.
But personally, I didn’t do it to lose weight, I did it bc I’ve read great things about it for auto-immune diseases, and so far I’ve seen awesome results. I try to stick to good fats, and I’ve never been a fruit eater, so the diet really works for me. 2 months ago you would see me eating chips and junk food very often, now I don’t crave it, my DH made me a keto cake for my birthday and while it was very yummy, I didn’t overeat like I used to. I tend to feel full very fast, which never used to happen.
I do wish there were better recipes for fat bombs, bc I do end up often too high in protein over fat bc I like fish.

Re: Anyone following ketognic diet?
NervousNell does your DH have a good bulletproof coffee recipe? I haven’t tried it yet bc I don’t know anyone who is doing this diet personally, and there are way too many recipes on Pinterest with all different ingredients. Some say to use heavy cream, some are just butter and coconut oil etc. I’d love to try it, but I dont want to make it wrong and screw up my progress.

Yes I tasted his and it was really good. I will ask him for the exact amount, but I know he uses the Kerrygold Butter and Heavy cream. Not sure if he uses MCT oil in it, but I'll ask.
Also, if anyone is looking for a yummy dessert, he just made an olive oil cake that smells amazing. I have had it before and even though I don't do Keto, I actually LOVED it. It was super moist and did not taste like it was low carb at all. If you want that recipe too I can get it.

OK I asked him and he uses 1 tablespoon of Kerrygold Butter, 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream, 1 tablespoon MCT oil. He then adds a few drops of stevia since he likes it a little sweet- but that's up to how you like your coffee.
He whips it up in the nutri bullet to blend the butter and make it creamy.
Hope that helps!

I'll get the recipe from him when I speak to him later. It has a nice glaze over it too, though I told him it would be delicious with home made whip cream sweetened with Stevia. I took a piece to work today for later. The house smelled amazing when he was baking it. I''l post the recipe later.

Awesome thank you! I think I’m getting in trouble with the homemade whipped cream hahah, my DH made me it for my bday cake and he made so much that I have been snacking on it randomly this week, and it’s way too good to be considered healthy on a diet lol.

LOL, well when it comes to keto there are a lot of things he eats that are soooo not considered healthy in the traditional dieting sense- like butter, full fat sour cream, cheese of all varieties, FAT BOMBS! so I think you can eat the whipped cream guilt free! It's funny some days at the end of the day he is like, oh I am low on fat today according to the fitness pal or whatever, I need to eat some more. Like what kind of diet is this???

Re: Anyone following ketognic diet?
Here is the olive oil cake recipe. I tried it today and it was out of this world. I could have eaten it for lunch! Delicious. I loved the texture- almost like a cornbread but not.
If you make it, be sure to use "light" tasting olive oil- not extra virgin. Extra virgin tastes too olive oily for a cake. The light has a much milder flavor.
Olive Oil Cake
For the glaze he just mixed 1/4 cup of powdered erythritol, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and two tablespoons of heavy cream
