Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I'd really like to start on nice days, but DH is against it. He feels like they will get dirty outside from the junk in the air, birds pooping on them, bugs crawling on them. Plus he thinks they will not be as soft as they are coming out of the dryer.
So I'm looking for some BTDT experience so that I can show him he's being silly.
TIA!

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
Hopefully I don't sound crazy bc I swear I've heard this somewhere but I thought you are not allowed to line dry laundry outside on LI. Am I nuts or making this up? Anyone want to laugh at me or validate me?
ETA: re the actual drying, you could initially put them in the dryer to soften them and let them dry to rest of the way outside. I could see the bird poop /bugs being an issue so this would be a big detractor for me.

I never heard that but it wouldn't surprise me. I bet LIPA got that legislation passed so they would get as much $$$ out of us as possible.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I was feeling super green on day, bought a wooden rack and put it outside on my balcony.
My neighbor took issue with it.
I think its a great idea though, especially in the summer, things dry so quickly.
For jeans, I would probably tumble them at the end to losen them up a bit.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
We line dry whenever possible. DH and I live next door to my parents so we use their dryer in the winter (we're in a very small house and don't have a dryer... no room for it until we invest in the stackables). But all summer and fall. and any other nice days that I'm doing laundry we line dry--- I've never heard of the LI rule though- but it could def be a possibility - we wouldn't be helping LIPA (b/c that's so much more important than being earth friendly)

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
My grandmother doesn't own a dryer. She hangs her clothes in her basement when it's cold, and outside in her backyard when it's warm. She lives in New Hyde Park, and has for many many many years. My mother used to hang our clothes out to dry when we were growing up. I never thought anything of it - until one day I had a bug on my towel. I don't plan to follow in their footsteps.
It is kind of nice though - the clothes feel very fresh after drying in the sun!

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I hang my clothes up on a rack in my house. I have when i was younger hung clothes outside, but the factors you said, air pollution, bird poop, bugs, I wouldnt dry it outside.
I hang most of my clothes on a wood rack because i dont want them to shrink

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I hang my clothes, but usually inside on a rack. On nice days I put the rack outside, but I have a covered balcony. Just shake it out and put it on air dry to soften the clothes and get the bugs out. Air drying is much better for your clothes and they last longer that way. Dryers really do a number on your clothes.

My mom always hung are clothes. The smell was ridiculously delicious.
I would do it.. but my dog would tear that line down in a heartbeat.

Many towns, esp inc villages, do have laws against this so you are not crazy. I don't believe it's all of LI though.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I use a wooden rack for items like jeans, sweaters, silk shirts, dress pants that I don't want to completely dry in the dryer. Once they are at the damp state or sometimes completely dry, i throw them in the dryer for 10 minutes on the "air fluff" setting just to get them soft.
When I was younger, my mom had a clothesline in the backyard & would use it throughout the fall, spring & summer

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I have a rack up in my laundry room. In the summer sometimes I will put a few cotton shirts on a hanger and hang them right outside my sliders. No clotheline though.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
My mother used to hang clothing all the time. She still does.
She put my sheets on my bed one night and I woke up with a wasp that stung my face then next morning. It must have gotten tangled in the sheets.
I will never hang clothing outside.

Me either, not a fan of this for many reasons.
ETA - I do have an indoor drying rack in my basement for many items, but would not put them outside.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I have a large area set up for hanging things to dry in our laundry room & I also have an outdoor clothes rack like this
DH set it up so it is easy to take down when we are having parties or we don't want to look at it. Clothes dryers are big energy suckers & the smell of fresh air beats the chemical smell of dryer sheets any day. Bugs don't scare me & I've never had any poop on my clothes & we have tons of wildbirds in our yard.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
I agree with your DH on both accounts. I won't hang my clothes outside because of softness..I'm afraid the clothes will be "rough" and I HATE "rough" towels. I am even more afraid of bugs/bird stuff, etc. I'm allergic to bees and it would be a bad thing if I brought one into the house in our sheets or towels or something.

i live in an incorporated village, and have for my entire life, and all of my family members here have a line that they can pull out. i've never heard of such a thing. i don't have a line, but i have a wooden rack that i will put outside when it gets warmer for certain items. not saying it's not true, but i can't imagine them using a helicopter to see who has a drying line to ticket.
air pollution, IMO, is not "bad" enough here to make a difference in your clothing. your clothes will not smell or get black. i've never had a bird poop on my clothes in my entire life--although i was pooped on at the beach a few times.
hang your clothes with pride! they smell wonderful and you save money. the only things i don't usually hang are towels because they are too stiff for me...but i may try putting them in the dryer for 5 minutes this year to see if it helps.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
My SMIL hangs her clothes when it is warm out and she loves it!
She also has a lot of stuff that can't go in the dryer (i.e. my SIL's cheerleading uniforms, etc) so she just does it with everything.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
Thanks all. My only option is outdoors, we don't have a basement and our washer/dryer are in our half bath. I just literally have no where to hang stuff indoors.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
My mom always hung out the laundry to dry... Never, ever had an issue with bird poop or bugs. I would do it in a heartbeat, but DH is against it. He said its very "urban-like" (I'm trying to be polite and not offend anyone here....). In other words, he thinks its unsightly to have your clothes hanging out for everyone to see. It's not like I would put our underwear out, but you know!

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
My mother, and all the other mothers in our neighborhood, would hang clothes out to dry. As early and late in the season as weather would allow - if the clothes weren't freezing on the line, they were outside.
We also would take the line down for parties and hang streamers or string lights from the poles instead.
However, stiffness was an issue but this:

is a good idea I think. I do this with a damp washcloth sometimes to get wrinkles out of clothes.
We never had birds pooping on the line - maybe it had to do with the clothespins that they didn't like.
As far as bugs, I don't know what harm could come of them occasionally touching your clothes and towels. We shook everthing out before folding them and placing them in the laundry basket anyway.
What we do now is hang them on an inside metal clothes hanger. I would probably wait to put up the fence before we start hanging clothes outside - our deck is higher than our neighbors and I'm not too keen on them seeing my underwear and bras.

Re: Anyone hang their clothes out to dry?
my mom has a line in her garage and dries most of her clothes in there. when they are almost dry, she tosses the clothes in the dryer for five minutes to soften them up. works like a charm and saves her tons of $$ in electric costs.

Not all incorporated villages have this law, but many do from what i know of. In Garden City, you cannot even wash your car on the street, for example.
Also might depend if your town had the law but just that no one ever complained about it being broken (that is IF your town even has this law). Most towns enforce laws when NEIGHBORS (who pay taxes and get annoyed at things other neighbors do) then complain about the law being broken. So while no one from the town will be flying over in helicopters to check, you can be sure if you have a neighbor who doesn't like it, they will call (if it is a law being broken AND they know the law exists).
I don't speak from experience, so I am trying to find the laws in the village codes. I can't seem to find any right now, but I personally know someone in Great Neck who had a neighbor who was annoyed that another neighbor was breaking the "law" and hanging laundry outside. The annoyed neighbor complained to the village that they need to address the law being broken.
I also used to work with someone who lived in Lake Success and she told me they were NOT allowed to hang clothing outside. Many many inc villages have laws against this, but certainly not all.
