We hang our clothes in the basement to dry as well. I put sheets/towels and a few other things in the dryer.
My grandmother hangs everything outside in the spring/summer/fall and we've never had an issue with bugs or birds. She also has lines in the garage that she hangs the clothes on as well.

I'd really like to start on nice days, but DH is against it. He feels like they will get dirty outside from the junk in the air, birds pooping on them, bugs crawling on them. Plus he thinks they will not be as soft as they are coming out of the dryer. 
So I'm looking for some BTDT experience so that I can show him he's being silly.

NOT GOING TO LIE....
I love my dryer. Clothes come out smelling like fabric softener and is always soft, and i love folding warm clothes.
But I just recently purchased a umbrella dryer (i don't like a line running across my yard) and I do like it (a lot). Not so much of an eye sore etc. I dry clothes on it then take them inside and tumble them in the dryer for 10 minutes to get the "soft" back into them. Forget all that going green BS. (not that i have anything against it) I do it purely b/c I am trying to maybe save a little money.
And currently no problem with birds or bugs. But like I said, i solved the soft issue with short tumble in dryer.
I would still highly recommend it.

I grew up in an incorporated village on LI and my Mom used to hang lots of our clothes out. I wonder if they have changed that rule since?  I do miss that smell.
