Anyone have a front loading washer/dryer?

Have you heard of buying a specific type of detergent for the washer? That if you use regular detergent - especially as much as the holder allows you to fill it to - you'll burn out your valve b/c it will create too many bubbles/suds??

The maintenance guy told us to buy "HE" detergent. Our washer was making a very LOUD screeching noise like a cat being murdered EVERY single time we ran it - so he explained that because we were using "regular" detergent and filling it to where the machine says is a full load that we burned out the valve.

He said it is in the book - who reads the book? Chat Icon

The book = lost. Chat Icon

Has anyone heard of this?? Chat Icon

Yes, I did not know that it would break otherwise but we use high efficiency detergent.

You should try to use HE detergent since it is an HE machine. If you do use regular detergent just use very little. This is what I do when I use baby all to wash Jaidy's clothes. We have had ours for a little over two years and it works just fine.

Re: Anyone have a front loading washer/dryer?

Wow - who knew?!

I guess I'm clueless but b/c they are rather new machines and b/c I have never owned one before I had no clue and the guy at the store didn't say peep about it.

Don’t use your regular detergent. Now for the reason WHY: All front loading, and a few top loading, washers, use small, high speed, water pumps. When these pumps are called on to pump, the very small pump will turn very fast trying to move as much water as its much larger, older cousins. If there is even the slightest amount of SUDS-MAKING detergent in the water, the small pump will instantly turn the water to suds, thus locking down the pump. The washer will sense this lock down, thus shutting down the washer with an LD (long drain) or SL (suds lock) code. . The HE detergent is more expensive, will NOT make suds, but will keep you out of hot water.

ETA ~ Check the manual. You might void the warranty if you don't use HE detergent.

You are a genius!!

Yes, the sudsing from non-He detergent can wear down the bearings on the parts of the machine.

I am glad I read this because I would have been using my regular detergent when we move and NEVER would have read the manual!

yup! any HE machine needs the HE detergent.
i think Tide and maybe ALL make it?? not every brand makes it.
its a little bit more expensive than regular, but i find i end up using less of it, so it lasts a little bit longer....

I know on my machine it says it right where the detergent goes as well. And I don't just pour it in, I use the measure cup on the lid.

Re: Anyone have a front loading washer/dryer?

Yup, I always buy the HE detergent and actually I am finding I can't even fill up the cup halfway because there will be suds left in the machine if I do. So I am down to less then half a cup per load.

I use regular detergent because I didn't know either. I have always used a lot less than the line in the cap because from teh beginning I noticed my clothes were coming out too soapy. I've had my machine for 5 years now *knock on wood* with no problems.

hmm - ours doesn't have that Chat Icon

the guy also told us to run the machine twice a month with just two tablespoons of vinegar to disinfect and keep the machine nice and clean - smelling good too.

Re: Anyone have a front loading washer/dryer?

I looked on the washer and I don't see an HE or a symbol....

The previous owners didn't leave us a manual either. Chat Icon

When we bought ours they told us at Home depot to make sure and only use HE - it was also in the manual.

Our salesman didn't tell us either, but I found out b/c the sample that was with the paperwork was HE, then I did some research.

Definitely start using the HE detergent. We've had ours repaired and the repair man said you never need to put more than line 1 in the detergent cap even for a large load. He said we were killing our machine because we were using too much detergent.
