Anyone have a thyroid problem?
If so-- how was it diagnosed and what doctor do you see??
I read something in Women's Health magazine-- and now of course I think I have an issue!

Re: Anyone have a thyroid problem?
put the magazine down...and step away from self-diagnosis.
I have hypo-thyroidism - underactive. I was diagnosed at about 12 y/o and my pediatrician at the time sent me to see an endocronoligst. They took blood tests and determined whether or not my TSH level was normal.
I have a pretty low dosage that I have to take and very little side-effects.

I agree.
They do a simple blood test. My mom has hypothyroidism and I'm borderline. We're taken care of by our family physician. He monitors my mom's medication (no problems, no side effects) and gives her blood tests every 3 months to make sure the levels are in the right place. Fortunately it's easy to diagnose and easy to treat

ha-- well the things that made me think were-- I get really hot and sweaty at night-- and that is what it said in the magazine-- you can have night sweats. And the other is super slow metabolism, which I feel I have..

My sister has this also... it's in our family... we get our blood tested almost every year.

Are you on birth control? That can add to an under active thyroid. I had some blood work recently and it came up as hypo and the first thing the doctor asked was if I was on birth control pills.

Re: Anyone have a thyroid problem?
I have hypo, get tested about every 4-6 months, and take medication to regulate it. Def bring it up at your next doctor visit, it's a pretty common problem.

I went off the pill in September-- but will probably go back on next month. When I first went off the pill-- I noticed a difference re: metabolism... but now it seems as though I have gotten right back to where I was before.
I need to make a doc appt anyway to talk abpout a couple of things.. I need to find a GP or can a gyno handle all of this?

FYI -- The night sweats/sensitivity to heat comes with an overactive thyroid and slow metabolism is a side effect of an underactive thryroid.
If you are really concerned your GP can order blood tests and would send you to an endocrinologist if it was necessary.

I need to just stop reading stuff-- I am the ultimate hypo!
I think I just want to know that I have a condition that slows down my metabolism so I can have it adjusted and I can lose those annoying 5 pounds!!

Re: Anyone have a thyroid problem?
If it will make you feel better, go to the Dr. and have your bloodwork done - It's always good to get a full blood work up every year or 2 anyway .........
If he does find you have hypothyroidism, it's just a matter of popping a pill every day and testing your blood regularly .......it definitely helped me -

I have many of the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism, but all of my tests come back normal. If you're looking for a doctor though, Valerie Peck at the NYU Medical Center is very good and she uses a more sensitive test than many other doctors.

Re: Anyone have a thyroid problem?
I have an underactive thyroid-I was diagnosed about alittle over a year ago. My gyno ran blood tests cause I had a very irregular cycle and it turned out I had a thyroid problem. It is very common-I am on Synthroid which I have to take everyday for the rest of my life!

has it helped with stomach problems and regulating your cycle?
I always have a stomach ache (I see a gastro fairly regularly and he has nothing to say about chronic gas, constipation, etc.) and my last menstral cycle was like 7 weeks!!

yes it has regulated me like I am on the pill!! You should have your gyno run some blood tests.

I have had a ton of bloodwork run in the past for various health issues-- maybe it is time to have everything checked out again
Thanks for your help!

Re: Anyone have a thyroid problem?
My hypothyroidism was diagnosed by my primary doc, and then I went to an endocrinologist to have it regulated. It took about 2 years for me to have it regulated to where I feel pretty normal.
I am convinced that going from a fast paced waitressing job to a sedentary desk job killed me even further. I always had tons of energy, now, forget it!
Good Luck Randi!

Only an Endocronologist can decide if you have a thyroid issue...not Jane magazine.
