anyone having a hard time deciding
weather or not to circumcise??? I don't post much but I wanted some opinions.
I would like to have it done when our son is born but my husband is having a hard time. I understand they feel pain ( or don't they?) my husband wants to wait.
Have anyone waited? any experience you can share would be helpful.
TIA

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
I had a hard time with the decision with my first son, but ultimetely left it up to my husband, and he felt the baby should be done. I def. would not wait until they were older...the older they are the harder it is on them.
I am also a nurse and have witnessed the procedure a few times, there is a few ways of doing it, some use anesthesia, some do not. The pain (crying) lasts such a short time either way. They either cry when the needle of anesthesia goes on or as the skin is clamped to numb it. Also, they really dont cry when its over. I am sure its sore, but it doesn't seem they feel tortured by it. Its a hard procedure to watch, but the babies really do tolerate it well.
This is such a personal decision, I know there is not much medical evidence to back up doing this procedure, what threw me over the edge was having friends who had issues later in life, and having to consider circumcision as an adult. not fun.
Good luck with your decision, there is no right or wrong answer here

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
There really is no right or wrong, it's up to you two to decide yes or no.
However...if you DO decide to do it, I would do it right away..better then in my opinion than when they're older. I circumcised both my boys and it was fine! They barely cried and since they're newborns they sleep so much anyway in the beginning which I think helps.

anyone having a hard time deciding
Unfortunately this is not a topic that I have ever seen end well on LIF when opinions are asked for. It is an extremely personal decision and whatever you and your DH is all that matters.
That being said, DH and I decided to circumcise if we had a boy. when DS was born at 33 weeks they waited until the morning of his discharge to do it. (He was 10 days old) He was fine afterwards, i saw him as they were bringing him back into the room from the procedure and he was quiet and content and drank a bottle with no problems right after.
When he was a few months old his dr and I noticed something wasn't 100% right. When I brought.him to a urologist it turns out that DS needed to have his circumcision redone. NOT 100% because of a botched job but there were other minor issues that could have caused problems as he got older. One week after he turned one year old he had to have it redone. When they are older they have to be put under general anesthesia which for me and DH was VERY nervewracking. Ds handled the operation like a champ and hasnt had any issues since (he is 2 years and 2.5 months now)
Imo, if you are going to do it, have it done when they are a newborn only for the simple fact that I wouldn't want to unnecessarily put them under the general anesthesia.

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
DS could not have one due to some webbing. We took that opportunity to really think about it. We decided to go ahead w/the procedure. We would hate for him to go through that as an adult. We have an appt w/the dr in about 2 months and hopefully the he will give the "go ahead" for the surgery.
Good Luck!

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
When DS was born we had to wait because he needed surgery to correct a birth defect there so they would not do it at birth. But after going to the urologist and at the surgical center talking to the other mom's who waited I would do it at birth again. There was a few teenagers there who did not get it done at birth and now want it done and its sooo much more complex when they get older. They need general anethesia at that point. That being said I know a a few people who had it done and it was not done right. So they had to have surgery to fix it. I would have a urologist do it as soon as we get d/c from the hospital.

Nope. We're having it done in the hospital when our son is born.
I know some people have issues with it and my reasons for having it done are purely cosmetic but that is what I would like to have done.

Whatever you decide is personal. If we have a boy we will get him circumsized, and will do it immediately. I do not feel the need to wait. Yes, they do feel pain, but it shouldn't last long. Again, it is so personal. Do what is in your heart.

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
We dont circumsize, I used to be very pro-circ until I did my own research on it and decided I could never do such a thing. Even tho my husband had it done as a baby, he is very upset that a choice about his own body was taken away from him. It does have physical affects on men but I wont get into graphic details. Most men who are circumsized are very defensive about it but alot of times it's because they dont wanna think about what they lost out on. Foreskin is basicly nerve endings ( as well as protection) so think about that in female terms, if our " nerve endings" got taken away against our will. Our 1st , a boy is happily intact and never had issues. Our 3rd, another boy will be intact as well. Men have been intact for thousands on years and you never heard of them dying from penis infections or something of the sort. Most males in the world in the world are intact, it's basicly a poplular medical trend in the US since the 1940's. As passionate as I am about it, I dont bash people for it. I understand the mindset because it was once my own . All I do is ask people to PLEASE do some research, watch videos and know exactly what you are doing & why before making such a important physical, personal choice about your child's body. If it still sits okay with you, then to each their own.

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
We would definitely do it if LO is a boy, but I think its horrible that some people are so judgmental and think that their side is "right". It's a personal, family decision that no one else needs to judge, IMO.

I asked DH, he wants to circumcise if we have a son. He isn't and it bothers him.
For some reason it really wasn't a battle for me either. I've never pictured not having my son circumcised.

If LO is a boy, we're having it done in the hospital right away. It's much easier on them to have it done when they're babies, then if they wanted to get it done as adults

anyone having a hard time deciding
It really is a personal decision.
Here is my story. We couldn't decide and my OB would not do it unless we both were 100% on our decision. So we waited. Well once you leave te hospital a Ped urologist needs to do it and the baby needs to be put under.
We just had my DS done 2 weeks before his first birthday. It was done in the hospital as an out patient surgery. He was a trooper but was sooooo miserable for the first day. To the point I wished we didn't do it. He was back to himself the next day. I have to say my DS healed amazingly. The dr said he did heal quickly but that is not always the case.
If I have another boy I will either not do it or do it at birth.
It's a very personal decision and there is no right or wrong.

Re: anyone having a hard time deciding
im a ftm so i dont have personal experience, but i have a good friend whose son was too small to get done at birth. she had to wait until he was about 1 year old and take him for surgery...she said it was the hardest thing ever. seeing him put to sleep and hoping he is ok. then after the surgery you have to keep up with cleaning it etc and when they are 1 they are defiantly more aware of what is going on and she said it got tough trying to take care of him after the surgery. she had to keep him out of daycare bc they wouldnt apply the medication.
so my opinion is, if you plan on circumcising and are just not sure when...i would do it at birth

You are entitled to your opinion but please I don't think it's fair for you to call it a popular medical trend when countless people pick this option for their son for religious reasons.

Well obviously religious or traditional Jewish people do it. Aside from that it's mainly done for cosmetic reasons - like wanting the son to look like it's father or assumptions that it is dirty , will cause UTIs or whatnot. In my experience, I had to go out of my way to prevent them from circumcising my son in the hospital because it's what's expected if you have a boy, it's expected of you to circumcised your son in American hospitals no matter what background you come from and alot of mothers take a "Doctors know best" & "But everyone is doing it " approach and dont question it. Only in recent years have mothers started to research such practices and stuff like vaccines, etc. -dont get me wrong, Im not the crunchie type but I believe in researching things before you do them to your child regardless of traditions or what society expects of you. . As a result of mothers starting to look into medical facts, circumcision rates are way down. Your child, your decision. I know it's a hot button issue, Im not debating it just saying parents should be informed as much as possible. Like I said, to each their own. Im not looking for a hormonal pregnant women catfight over this
