anyone own a high ranch? if so please give me your opinion!
we're putting high hats in our living room (the room when you first come up the stairs). we're thinking of also putting a ceiling fan in since it would make it so much cooler. DH is worried that people "don't do that" in our kind of house. do you think it would look funny? i really don't care what other people do or don't do, but he does. should we just stick with high hats?

i dont own one- but my parents do and they have a fan and it looks very nice... i wouldnt worry about what other people do- if you use the room a lot and it will make it more comfortable for you- then go for it
they also make more stylish expensive looking fans- maybe your dh feel better if it was a very nice looking fan

I just bought and renovated a high ranch. We put ceiling fans in every room, including the LR and kitchen. We dont have high hats in LR but I wouldn't think it would be "weird" tho. We do have high Hats in the kitchen, along with pendulm lights over the countertop bar area.

Re: anyone own a high ranch? if so please give me your opinion!
i grew up in a high ranch. my parents had a ceiling fan in the dining room which was adjacent to the living room, which had no ceiling fan. i think having 2 so close to each other might have looked funny.
my personal preference wold be to have a fan in the living room as opposed to the dining room, but only if the room is more on the casual side. IMO ceiling fans don't belong in formal rooms.
plus i don't know how that would look with high hats too - is your DH worried that it might be too much?

we have a nice chandelier in the dining room--no fan there! it is more of a formal living room, but it's a living space--people are in it every day. that's where we sit with company, read the paper, etc. i guess what makes it more formal is there's no tv--just couches, coffee table, etc.
DH just doesn't know if people put fans in their living rooms. i don't know either. it's not necessary--high hats would be enough but the fan would keep the room cool. not that it gets that hot (we'd put on the AC)...

We don't have a high ranch but we have high hats AND a ceiling fan in the LR. Our LR is also kind of attached to the DR (one very big room) and the DR has a regular chandelier type light.

i only meant formal like people who have living rooms that they don't use if it's used as an actual living space for every day, then IMO that's not formal, even if your stuff is really nice!
i think a fan in the living room is fine but i'm trying to picture them along with the high hats, KWIM?

Re: anyone own a high ranch? if so please give me your opinion!
We just bought a hi-ranch and we have a ceiling fan in the dining room and the foyer/entry way. You certainly should do what YOU feel you want, but I will say that I do like the look of where the fans are in my house. I think the diningroom one and foyer one have nice spacing and at the same time give an even cooling off when on at the same time!
Hope this helps!

we have a Hi-Ranch, but don't have a fan or high hats right now in the LR. We do have a fan in the kitchen. But our house gets hot because we have cathedral ceilings in the DR & Kitchen. So if when we put in high hats in the LR we probably will put in a ceiling hugger fan also. I don't think it's odd at all.

Re: anyone own a high ranch? if so please give me your opinion!
i agree with doing what you want and need in your own home, and not worrying about what other people do or think. i have a high ranch as well and use the upstairs living room as formal... i don't have a ceiling fan in there. i feel that it gets decent cross ventilation with the living room and dining room window and i have a large ac unit in the wall that attaches the LR & DR so if it gets too hot, that goes on and it does the entire upstairs. in the downstairs room, we use as a den/tv room, whatever you want to call it. i have high hats and a ceiling fan down there. the downstairs doesn't get too hot, so with the ceiling fan, it's comfy down there. eta- if you're worried about how it will look with high hats and a ceiling fan in the same room, i wouldn't worry. like i said, we have that downstairs and it looks perfectly fine.
