It's typically given in the hospital, hours after birth.

I don't think my DD got it. If she did, I wasn't aware, or just too out of it to realize.

They get with in minutes of birth, it is so that their blood will clot. I have never heard of anyone refusing it.

DS was not given it at the hospital or ever. The only thing he got at the hospital was the Hep B.

I'm curious, How do you know? I was never told that my DS got it, I just assumed because its a common practice in all hospitals.

The Hep B shot? My dr asked me if I wanted DS to get it. He got it within an hour of him being born.

Every baby gets Vitamin K - it's namdatory unless you have previously filed a religious objection.

I think it's a requirement in the US. It's not a vaccine- it's to help with blood clotting. It's given within a few minutes of birth.

They don't tell you this...I read it in pregnancy books and what to expect when giving birth, staying in the hospital, etc.

Why would you refuse it? The claims that it increases the chances of childhood leukemia have been found untrue.

You can opt for oral vitamin k if you don't want to give the shot.

It's not me, it's a friend who wants to refuse it. She said her Lamaze teacher says she can refuse it for the baby.
I don't know her reasoning, I'm assuming it's the old leukemia link.

Re: Anyone refuse the Vitamin K injection for their newborn?
Vitamin K and erythromycin for the eyes are mandatory, but you can refuse it for a few different reasons.
We will be refusing the shot unless the labor is difficult and the baby is bruised. There are a lot of studies being conducted right now that is linking the VItamin K shot with increase in jaundice in newborns.
There is a reason why babies are bron vitamin K deficient and why there is a low amount in breast milk. Over loading the body with such high doses right after birth puts a lot of strain on the liver and kidneys of the babies and therfore contribute to jaundice.
it is an educated decsions that parents need to make together.

Re: Anyone refuse the Vitamin K injection for their newborn?
From my research if you refuse the vitamin K, the hospital is mandated to report it to CPS and they have to open a case file. This is why they just do it because it is mandated. Not worth it IMHO. The only way to get around it is by having a home birth or delivering in NJ.
ETA:
This link is a NY state link about it. It says you can not claim religious exception for the vitamin k and that you can not refuse it in NY. Read more
