Anyone run a 10k or half marathon in summer
Has anyone run a race in July or August?
How bad was the heat? I know the races start early so hopefully it is before the hottest part of the day?
I am considering signing up for the queens half marathon on July 30th.

Depends on where it is and the time!
I actually ran a race at the end of the June and the heat was awful. I ran in a sports bra and shorts and I was still sweating! It was around 9AM and it was just so humid!
I ran a race in August though (at Jones Beach)- Marcum Workplace Challenege. It was near the water and later on in the day so the weather wasn't bad.
Of couse these were only 5ks. After doing them duing the hot summer months, I think I could manage a 10k but a half could be brutal. I'd rather run in December!

Re: Anyone run a 10k or half marathon in summer
Thanks so much for your reply, I'm in a pickle.
I ran the Rutgers UNITE half marathon this weekend but I was sick and due to flooding, they cut it to 9.5 miles. I did more than that in training so I feel disappointed.
The next opportunity in May will be tough since we are going on vacation and I won't be able to train AT ALL.
The next chance is this summer, when I worry about the heat.
I feel like I did a lot of training and I don't want to waste it.

weather will make or break...that's why there are few big races in the summer. Heat really does affect me, but I did do the NYC mini 10K (beginning of June) and it was pretty brutal, but I was just in good shape and actually had a pretty near PR time.
I think heat was a huge reason that they moved the NYC half to March.

Re: Anyone run a 10k or half marathon in summer
I ran the Manhattan half marathon in Central Park a few times way back when it used to be held in August. That race, especially with the hills, was pretty brutal but definitely doable. I mean, as long as you've been training for it up until race day, you should be fine. We are just getting into warm weather so our bodies are making the adjustment. But if you continue to run thru the warm weather you should be fine. Don't expect to come out with a PR tho.

I ran a 10k last summer in July and it was AWFUL. I didnt train for it which was also the problem but the humidty was so bad. The set up misting stations every mile b/c it was brutal.
That being said, I plan on running the same race again this year.... But I am hoping if I train for it i will feel better at the end.

I think acclimation is key. By August you will have been training in the heat. But when last year's LIHM was so hot, I, at least, was not used to it and bombed.

Re: Anyone run a 10k or half marathon in summer
i ran a 10k last july (the NYRR Splash and dash) and i'm not going to lie, it was pretty awful. not only was it super sunny, but it was sooo humid.
however, i love running races, so will probably sign up for a bunch this summer anyway. you just need to be sure to stay fully hydrated, and where light clothing. i find a running hat to be critical as well - not only does it block the sun, but it prevents the sweat from dripping in my eyes

Re: Anyone run a 10k or half marathon in summer
I think it kind of depends on you and how you respond to heat. I cannot run in the heat. I hate it and feel like I want to die no matter if it's the beginning or end of summer. I just can't acclimate to it ever. So I avoid summer races now. But some people are able to adjust and it doesn't affect them nearly as much. YOu'll never know unless you try o
